When it comes to keeping a New Year's resolution to exercise, more a home gym may be the key to turning your resolution into your lifestyle. When it comes to buying a home with a home gym in the Hudson Valley and Catskills, let me be your guide...

It’s mid-January...what did you resolve? Studies show that most people make resolutions around health and money. In 2021, 50% of people who made resolutions resolved to exercise more and/or lose weight. The statistics on how many people actually keep their resolution are a little....well, sad! They're a bummer! 8%. 8% of resolvers keep their resolutions through the year. Yeek. Why does this happen?! What's wrong with all of us resolvers?!

Nothing really.

The problem lies where our resolutions collide with our habits and lifestyle. If your greatest joy is staying in your PJ's until 11am while you work from home, there's no leaf you can turn over that will push you out the door, smartly dressed for the gym at 5:30am every morning so you'll be back at your desk in time for your first zoom at 9. It's not going to happen! Maybe for a couple of weeks, but after that? Not happening. Those PJ's are going to be call your name, and you're going to answer. If this is you, it's fine! Don't worry! You're in good company with the other 92% of people whose resolutions crashed into their lifestyles.

I find the easiest way to add a new habit is to incorporate into my day it in a way that makes the smallest impact on my routine possible. This might sound like the lazy persons way to make change, but I say, no! This is the way that works! If you have a space to exercise that you love (or at least like) in your home you can work out in your PJ's where no one can see you. You can sing Pat Benatar tunes loud while you spin. You can grunt all you want and the purple and yellow grunt police will have nothing to say about it. You can listen to the same NPR program you've been listening to for years while you slowly sip your coffee and bench press 10 pounds more than you did last week. If the only thing that changes about your day is that you take a few minutes away from each of the other activities you do habitually and put them into a half an hour exercise bank, chances are good that you'll just fold that workout into your day, every day. So my friends, let's find you a home Upstate with a gym space, so you can enjoy a life that's just a tiny bit different, but a whole lot healthier.
