Climax NY Real Estate
You come up Route 81 from Coxsackie and take a right on County Route 26, then head up a steep hill to where there’s a sweet little cottage on the right, and if it’s spring there are dozens of dancing daffodils out front. Now you’re in the Coxsackie hamlet of Climax. It’s farmland but on the mountainside, with old houses, old barns, lush green countryside, orchards, fields…. This is why the Irish came here, because it looks like home. You climb higher and higher on Route 26, and when you get to Willow Creek Farm, you turn around. The view is heaven: You can see the entire Berkshires range, from north to south.
Coming back down I met a lady and her daughters doing yard work, and I mentioned the awe-inspiring view. She said, “Yes, the Berkshires in that direction and the Catskills when you look the other way. We call it the top of the world.”

At the very bottom of the hill is Coxsackie, so although Climax feels like the middle of nowhere, it’s not at all. Coxsackie has all the necessities, and then you go back up the hill and pretend you’re in Ireland, or Switzerland, if you’d rather. Any kind of walk is an uphill-downhill hike, unless you’re down on the Coxsackie flats, getting your groceries or gasoline. Coxsackie is on the Hudson, so there’s a lot to do and see there, when you come out of your bucolic reverie in Climax. Not that Coxsackie isn’t a quiet place; it is.
Coxsackie’s Reed Street Historic District is especially charming; that’s where the boat launch is, a nice Hudson riverfront park and some of the most wonderful old homes… plus Che Figata Bistro, where the menu changes every day. Coxsackie is also home to the Greene County Historical Society, Bronck House Museum, and the Vedder Research Library, all preserving the wealth of Greene County history and tradition.
When you’ve had your fill of local civilization and you’re going back up the mountain, you might pass a hand-printed sign, “goats chickens rabbits.” If that’s not what you’re marketing for, you’ll want to try Boehm Farm, since 1903, a mainstay of Climax. During the growing season, you can get delicious cherries, plums, apples, peaches and pumpkins grown right there; they also have fresh veggies, honey, maple syrup, donuts, pies and like that at the farm stand.
On the new side is Climax Cooperative Farm; using “minimum mechanical intervention,” they grow tomatoes, beets, kale, flowers and more. If you’re curious about another sign in Climax, Linnea's Handcraft, you’ll find it leads to Bitta Albright, who gives classes in ceramic painting, soap-making, baking, you name it!
Climax NY Homes
Climax is a great place to build. There are old logging trails through the forest and lots of streams and ponds. If you choose the right spot, the views will knock your socks off and possibly other pieces of clothing; maybe that’s why it’s called Climax! haha... No, I think it’s called that because of the view itself; you’ve reached the Climax of what’s beautiful.
There’s a completely refurbished 1900 Climax cabin on 29 acres of Climax real estate, with three bedrooms, 1.5 baths, a new deck and its own pond! Another pond is available with an architect-designed Climax home for sale; this one’s got decks on three sides, and it’s right on a spring-fed pond and surrounded by 20 Climax acres. The well is in at a 13-acre Climax land parcel with Catskills mountain views on a cul-de-sac of private Climax real estate.
