Lexington NY Real Estate

Lexington might be the Catskills best-kept, most beautiful secret. Near two major ski resorts—Windham and Hunter—and with the Schoharie Creek right outside the back door, Lexington is a natural paradise. Hunter Mountain is to the East of Lexington, and the Rusk Mountain Wild Forest including, Rusk, Evergreen, Pine Island and Packsaddle mountains, stretches around everywhere else as far as the eye can see. This is utopia for outdoorsy-types: hikers, skiers, backpackers, deep-yoga breathers, bird-watchers, mountain-climbers, pinecone collectors, whitewater enthusiasts, and fisherwomen and -men. Some folks who’ve been canoeing on the Schoharie Creek report a mix of white and calm water, with “an eagle not more than 10 feet away” and “a nest of ravens with the young ones screaming for lunch.” And, they said, they have only encountered one other canoe in the three years they have been navigating the Schoharie. In Lexington, you’re unlikely to find yourself in a crowd.

Lexington also happens to sit right at the intersection of two major routes: 23A and 42, so if you are the sort of person who spends time outdoors just long enough to get into your car, you’ll find easily accessible avenues to adventure elsewhere. If you’re looking to get out for a drink or a good meal, Windham and Hunter aren’t only for skiers! Both accommodate several good restaurants, taverns and places to lodge your overflow guests. Windham has a historic feel to it; Hunter is quite brash and up-to-date, you might say.
Follow Route 42 south over Halcott Mountain through the awe-inspiring Deep Notch, and you’ll find yourself on Route 28 in Shandaken’s hamlet of Phoenicia, from whence you can find your way to Kingston and all the city has to offer. Or turn down Spruceton Road in West Kill, where there are some hip hangouts. The fact is the Catskills are being called home by more and more newcomers, joining their fantastic creativity and vitality with the local creatives who’ve come before them and the wonderful woods.
The Town of Lexington has a full-time population hovering around 1,000 people, but it’s a busy community with a lot of resources. Townspeople keep in touch through an excellent website, where you can attend Zoom Town Board meetings and find a list of local businesses and services you might need, not to mention contact info for all the local representatives, boards, committees and emergency services.
