Lanesville is the first Greene County hamlet you enter when you leave Ulster County after winding up through Chichester. That’s just north of Phoenicia, and really the only way to get to Lanesville—unless you come by helicopter—is by the 12.5-mile-long Route 214, either down from Route 23A between Hunter and Tannersville or north from Phoenicia.
Route 214 follows the course of the Stony Clove Creek through what’s known as Stony Clove Notch, and you know you’re in Lanesville when (aside from the signs) the way opens up into a narrow valley, the road flattens out for a while and suddenly you see Hunter Mountain directly in front of you. There’s a fairly lengthy and interesting entry in Wikipedia about Route 214, which is quite an old road; it gives you a feeling for the area.
The Stony Clove Notch cuts between two Catskills ranges. To the west is the Hunter-West Kill Wilderness, including Hunter, West Kill, North Dome, Sherrill and Balsam mountains; in the east loom Plateau, Olderbark, Sugar Loaf, Twin, Indian Head and Plattekill mountains and the Indian Head Wilderness. Of course, when you’re in Lanesville you can’t see all those mountains on either side, only the ones directly facing on Route 214, but the point is you can leave your home in Lanesville and go for a steep mountain hike without driving anywhere. You’re living in vacationland!

Officially, there’s a trailhead at the top of Diamond Notch Road, which is directly north out of Lanesville; at the end of that trail is a lovely waterfall. The trail is pretty and rocky, with lots of streams running through and only a couple of miles from the center of Lanesville NY.
A bit further up Route 214 is Devil’s Tombstone Campground, where you can pick up Devil’s Pass, connecting the mountains to your east and west and leading to some of the Catskills’ highest peaks. One of the oldest campgrounds in the Catskill Forest Preserve, Devil’s Tombstone is a small, primitive campground with wooded sites and pretty little Notch Lake. (No swimming or boating is permitted.)
Of course, if you’re a skier you’re well-placed in Lanesville to get up early and hit the Hunter Mountain slopes, just a few miles north. Windham Mountain’s only about 10 miles further away. And if you head south on 214 back to Route 28, you’ll be in Belleayre within a half-hour.
Whether you’ve been skiing or out for a walk or ride or down to town for supplies, once you get home to Lanesville, you’ll want to stay there a while and listen to the birds and the streams. Lanesville NY is just far enough out of town for peace and quiet and yet handy to everything when it’s time to stock the larder. Lanesville is ideal!
When you’re contemplating moving to a Lanesville home for sale, perhaps you’ve got some friends in mind to share with. In which case you’ll want to check out a two-family Lanesville home for sale near the Diamond Notch trailhead; it’s got six bedrooms and two full baths, a deck with super mountain views and an in-ground pool, all on one acre of Lanesville real estate. Or there’s a private 920-square-foot Lanesville chalet for sale on a little over one acre of Lanesville real estate with two stone fireplaces, a wraparound deck and lovely mountain views out the back door.
