Cornwall NY Real Estate

Cornwall NY is ideal for anyone loving the mountains as well as what are poetically known as the steel canyons of NYC. Set in a relatively flat landscape north of a forest wilderness and south of the New Windsor suburban sprawl, Cornwall is 50 miles by car to Manhattan; Metro-North stops at Salisbury Mills-Cornwall station; and Stewart Airport, the Palisades Parkway and NYS Thruway are 20 minutes away. Schunnemunk Mountain State Park surrounds Cornwall to the west, and the western Hudson Highlands lie to the south... the best of both worlds.

When you’re in Cornwall NY you’ll be drawn towards Main Street, not only because it’s picturesque and home to attractive shops and food outlets and one of the oldest buildings in town—the Sands-Ring Homestead—but because Riverlight Park is there. That’s where you can visit the Town of Cornwall Farmers Market Wednesdays May through October for the wares of Florida Bakery & Deli, Edgwick Farm, Pancake Hollow Maple Syrup, Ash Hopper Soap, Grand Mango Caribbean Food and Auntie Liana’s Kitchen, among others. Riverlight Park is the site of Music in the Park concerts June through September. The community pool, tennis courts and several baseball diamonds are at Riverlight Park; and it’s central to the Cornwall Public Library and town hall.

Just across the street at the triangular Monument Park, Main Street splits off to the left, Hudson Street takes you towards Cornwall-on-Hudson, and you begin catching glimpses of the Hudson Highlands mountains on the east side of the Hudson River. If you stay on Hudson Street and fork left at Dock Hill Road, you’ll go right down to the riverfront, what used to be Cornwall Landing way back when, and find the Cornwall Yacht Club and Donahue Memorial Park, where you launch your kayaks and canoes or relax—or get married—in the gazebo.

Cornwall NY Homes For Sale

Cornwall Homes For Sale

In its prime, starting as early as 1770 and lasting well into the 1940s, Cornwall Landing was a bustling commercial and industrial center where factories and mills made bricks, processed timber and built boats and many other goods. Trains and steamboats shipped freight and ferried passengers to and from NYC, significantly contributing to the growth and prosperity of Cornwall NY.

Integrating the past and present and bringing the riverfront into prominence is the aim of many a small Hudson River town. The Cornwall Alliance is a group of citizens dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Cornwall and committed to improving the town and promoting it as a desirable destination for new residents, businesses and tourists. Community groups bring various annual festivals to town, like the Cornwall Fall Festival in September, the Cornwall Independence Day celebrations and the Riverfest in June.

When you’re up for less organized outdoor experiences, visit Black Rock Forest, a scientific field station open to the public for hiking; the 500-acre Storm King Art Center or the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. Hike at Storm King and White Horse mountains or, across the Hudson River, Bull Hill and Breakneck Ridge.

The natural beauty of the mountains and the river and its accessibility to NYC make Cornwall NY one of the most perfect places to live in the Hudson Valley.
