Walden is the southern terminus of the Walden-Wallkill Rail Trail which allows foot traffic, bikes, horses, skates, and skis. Walden is also home to seven public parks! And the best news of all for summer: Walden has a public beach at James W. Olley Community Park, open mid-June through August there’s a volleyball court, BBQ grills and picnic tables at the pavilion.
Angry Orchard is the place for hard cider in Walden and a lovely hang-out. Sit at the picnic tables and sip a hand-crafted cider—pear or apple, dry or sweet—and bask in the orchard experience in the trees behind the cider house with the Shawangunk Ridge silhouetted against the western sky.
Another hotspot is the Brewery at Orange County Hop where the art of beer from the people who grow the hops and make the chain-saw art. At the same time bask in live music at their outdoor stage, like blues, funk and soul with the Barn Cats; or jazz, swing/jump, Big Band with the Swing Vipers. For a bit of the gab, don’t miss Sweeney’s Irish Pub, or for something in the performing arts, check out the Hudson Valley Conservatory.
Walden rings with music at the Music In the Grove free concert series, nine weeks of tunes at Wooster Grove Park in the center of the village where attendees hang out on the lawn, dip their toes in the Tin Brook, enjoy refreshments provided by the local Hannaford and whoever’s on the bandstand: hillbilly, bluegrass, soul and jazz. Wooster Park also screens movies in the summer.
There are lots of things to do in the village of Walden, picking up local foods and goods at the Walden Farmers Market, touring the lovely old Jacob T. Walden House, grabbing a good book at the library or wandering down to the intersection of South Montgomery Street and Bradley Avenue and gaping at the fabulous falls on the Wallkill River. The Osiris Country Club is in Walden as is Saddle Brook Farm Animal Rescue where they offer riding lessons and/or petting the rescued horses.
If you can’t find what you want in the village, it’s easy to get somewhere else. Walden is at the crossroads of state routes 208 and 52 and just 10 minutes from Stewart International Airport and the intersection of Route 84 and the NYS Thruway.
