The town of Southeast was named for its location in the southeast corner of Putnam County, which gives it a nice, tucked-away sort of sound. But, buying real estate and living in Southeast actually means having access to everywhere you want to go, from New York City to Danbury to Albany, as well as the peace and quiet of rural small-town living. The hamlets of Southeast (which include Brewster) feel like home and are home to the wonderful community activities that together make a place a nice place to live.

Southeast is made beautiful in large part by water. Development is carefully limited in Southeast to protect the five New York City reservoirs within its borders: a portion of the Croton Falls and all of Bog Brook, Middle Branch, Diverting and East Branch reservoirs are part of the topography and scenery of Southeast. On top of that there are creeks and ponds, as well as several lakes that do not serve as reservoirs in Southeast: Lake Tonetta, Brewster Pond, Haines Pond and Peach Lake are the largest of these. The town is proud and protective of all this water: it enhances property values, provides recreation venues, and is, as we mentioned, very pretty.
There’s another significant contributing factor to the beauty of Southeast; there are four designated scenic and historic routes in town: Starr Ridge Road, Milltown Road, Turk Hill and Allview Avenue. A drive along any of these routes takes you past lovely historic homes, equestrian properties, and fields of flowers and ponds.
Part of Brewster, the main village of Southeast, is known for its historic homes, including the magnificent Walter Brewster House, headquarters of the Landmark Preservation Society of Southeast. They also own the Old Southeast Church and the Doansburg Schoolhouse.
Whether you’re a nature lover or love to see a bi-monthly Broadway matinee, Southeast NY is a convenient choice for you, situated as it is at the intersection of interstates 684 and 84 and state routes 22, 312, 6 and 202. It also has two Metro-North stops (at the Brewster and Southeast Stations)! There’s enough economic activity that you’ll be able to do your shopping, have a nice dinner, and get a great coffee, and this is a perfect jumping off place for people who work in Westchester, NYC, and Fairfield County CT. or in Amenia or Millerton, for that matter!
Southeast homes for sale run the gamut from a $1.5-million estate featuring an 11-bedroom converted 1800s barn, in-ground pool and a pool house to a waterfront fixer-upper for $200k. From farms for sale to woodland cabins, Southeast may have just what you’re looking for.
