Stanford real estate - rural, bucolic, connected to a fantastic community. When looking for a new place to call home, you can tell something about a town's essence by their social media pages. You’ve got to admire the way the Town of Stanford keeps the community together and informed. On their “Notes from the Supervisor” Facebook page there’s generally at least one post per day, if not more, on everything from the weather, to admonishing whoever is stealing campaign signs. to a photo of winter sledders on Town Hall Hill. Under “community news” on the town website there are separate links for dogs, cats and other pets of the town; the main town photo is of a serene lakeside cottage. The Stanford town seal depicts two cows grazing in a mountain pasture with clouds hovering overhead. Stanford is a rural place. Stanford is a charming place. Stanford is a great place to start your Hudson Valley real estate search.

There's so much to do in Stanford, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendation on the best things to do in Stanford.
You can feel the bucolic character of Stanford—founded in 1793—when you read the names of its neighborhoods: Attlebury, Stissingville and Bare Market are referred to as rural crossroads; McIntyre is what’s called a rural neighborhood; Hulls Mills is a residential community around Hunns Lake; Bangall is simply known as a hamlet; and Stanfordville is called the commercial and residential hub of the town on Route 82. New York State Route 82 and the Taconic State Parkway are the major roads passing through Stanford, but there are only about 75 people per square mile in the 50 square miles of the town (compared to 27,000 people per square mile in NYC, to put it in perspective).
The people living in Stanford NY are aware of their great good fortune in their beautiful, untouched surroundings, and they frequently get together to celebrate their community with age-old American traditions: they sponsor a Pumpkins in the Park Festival, a Farmland Cycling Tour, Veterans’ Day Parade, Santa’s Visit and an Easter Egg Hunt. And what’s more American than baseball? There are three baseball diamonds right in town at Stanford Recreation Park, as well as tennis and basketball courts, a pond, pavilion and playground.
For more wide-ranging adventure there are two local parks of over 500 acres each where Stanford neighbors enjoy nature: Stissing Mountain Multiple Use Area and the Buttercup Farm Audubon Sanctuary. There are six miles of trails at Buttercup, a relatively undeveloped area of diverse habitats with rolling grasslands, forests, a former orchard and a marshy, flooded woodland; it’s said you may spot over 80 species of birds on a spring day!
At one time you might have seen as many cows as birds in Stanford, as the land was covered in dairy farms well into the 20th century. While the cow population has dwindled, farms are still thick on the ground here: Willow Vale Farm has veggies and hand-woven baskets. They also grow flowers at Bear Creek Farm, and Rocky Reef Farm is known for its pumpkins, gourds and squash, and especially their October you-pick-‘em pumpkin patch.
Other notable community businesses are the farmers-market-style Big Rock Market, located in a beautiful Victorian; and the Animal Farm Foundation, whose programs foster mutually beneficial relationships between animals and people. If you love browsing antique shops, there are quite a few of those in the neighborhood, too!
Antiques aren’t limited to the shops of Stanford NY. Stanford real estate is a good place to look for beautifully maintained historic Hudson Valley homes for sale. Recent MLS listings have included an 1890s four-bedroom, three-bath, 3,600-square-foot Stanford farmhouse on 4.8 acres across the road from a nature preserve with wide-plank pine floors, a wood-burning fireplace, wide mill-work and bead-board cabinetry. An even older Stanford home for sale on nearly seven acres of Stanford was an 1750s gem in a meadow surrounded by woods and stone walls.
You might rather buy Stanford real estate in the form of land for sale. Perhaps together we can find a parcel that's near protected land with stone walls on it that will complement the modern home you've been dreaming of. We'll bring the old and the new together! No matter what your plan for a Stanford home for sale, a Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty can help you take action.
