Mahopac is Upstate NY lake country and Mahopac real estate is very much about the lakes and the beautiful terrain that surrounds them. Lying within the Croton Falls Reservoir watershed and full of fields, forests and lakes, Mahopac is, quite simply, pretty. One sixth of Mahopac’s 6.4 square miles is covered with water in the form of the 580 acre Lake Mahopac and Lake Secor, Teakettle Lake, Kirk Lake, Lake Casse, Spout Lake, and Long Pond. A drive around Mahopac feels like an escape. Mahopac real estate owners are treated to romantic, watery scenery daily; motoring along small roads that wrap around the hamlet’s lakes as they run their errands and go to and from work. There's so much to do in Mahopac, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendations on the best things to do in Mahopac.
Once an agrarian community cultivated by tenant farmers and a crossroads for travel between colonial revolutionary war encampments, Mahopac is now home to New York City and Westchester commuters who love the lakes, the woods, and the room to roam. As the town has changed, so too has the pronunciation of the name. Some locals still call it “Ma-HO-pac”, but the majority go with the updated “MAY-o-pac”.
Whether you’re talking about real estate or recreation, Lake Mahopac is central to life in the Carmel hamlet of Mahopac. The heart of the village is the lake’s south shore, where boutiques, eateries and watering holes have quite a view. Notably, Lake Mahopac is one of the closest lakes to NYC to allow power boating - there’s some serious fun to be had in Mahopac.
Not all Mahopac’s lakes are public, of course, but people who live in Mahopac can swim at Sycamore Park’s Long Pond beach and let their pups romp at the dog park. Then there’s Chamber Park on the shores of Lake Mahopac, home to summer and fall concert series, Red Mills Park which is both a pretty place to take a break and an outdoor museum of local history, the 9 mile stretch of the Empire Trail called the Putnam Trailway that runs from Mahopac to Brewster (it's dog friendly too!), a skate park and a roller hockey rink! If being outdoors daily is an important part of your lifestyle, let us help you find a home for sale in Mahopac where you can live your best life!
Living in Mahopac, naturally, is also about all the other things people do. Some residents enjoy the Mahopac Garden Club, others volunteer at the library (which has the nicest view in town, they say); many are involved in youth sports, seniors meet at Koehler Senior Center whilst some folks contribute to the care of their surroundings through the Environmental Conservation Board.
Besides two shopping plazas on Route 6 where you’ll find the supermarkets, Mahopac is primarily residential, with winding, hilly roads running around the lakes and through the woods. It’s a relaxed and friendly hamlet where everyone looks out for their neighbors, a nice place to live.
Mahopac NY is, to some extent, a commuter community for people working in Westchester and NYC. Most residents live in single-family detached homes as well as townhouse, condo and lake communities. The lake homes aren’t all imposing; there are small bungalows and lake-front condos. However, if you are looking for a luxurious lake home with room to bring all your people together to enjoy lakeside living, you’ll find one in Mahopac. We can help.
