Fishkill NY was one of the earliest towns settled in Dutchess County. During the Revolutionary War, General Israel Putnam, under General George Washington’s command, established a supply depot in Fishkill to guard the mountain pass to the south; it became the main supply depot to the northern division of the Continental Army, with about 2,000 soldiers encamped there. The only remaining structure of the Depot, the Van Wyck Homestead--now the site of the Fishkill Historical Society--was General Putnam’s headquarters, near what is now the intersection of routes 9 and 84.
With the Fish Kill (from the Dutch Vis Kill, meaning “creek full of fish”) Creek running down to the Hudson, Fishkill was a perfect place for mills to spring up; they did over the 19th century and, with them, a boom in industry that lasted until the post-Civil War depression, which only ended when Texaco bought one of the old woolen mill sites for a research center. Today’s industry is based in technology, and the farmland is covered with Fishkill NY homes, but the rural tradition remains strong in the hearts and minds of the community, with neighbor helping neighbor and preservation groups fighting to maintain what still remains of the historic settlement.
On Main Street in old Fishkill Village, the prettiest buildings are practically opposite one another at the intersection of Route 52 (Main Street) and Route 9: the stone circa-1731 First Dutch Reformed Church, one of the rare churches with a weathervane, and its DuBois House; and the beautiful wooden 1768 Trinity Episcopal Church are reminders of times-passed. The United Methodist Church is the anchor for a lovely neighborhood of antique homes. The pristine structure, just a block off Main Street, is surrounded by trees and pretty houses that date from the late 1800s. The Blodgett Memorial Library is a neighbor.
Main Street Fishkill offers great dining, from fine all the way to deli sandwich. One of the many Italian restaurants is Il Figlio Enoteca, whose emphasis is on fresh pasta and simple Mediterranean cuisine. Fishkill’s got one good eatery after another; you’ve your choice of Indian, Thai, sushi, Puerto Rican, a diner, Chinese and even American, at Farm to Table Bistro; they’ve merited 4.4 for food on Zagat.
After a good lunch, you might like to try one of the local taverns, which range from a couple of self-professed dives—the Hopewell Inn and the White House— to the stylish Eleven 11.
Residents might hop off their high stool and jump onto a high horse at either Horse Sense/Royal Equestrian or Misty Mountain Stables equestrian centers. Golfers can get their kicks at Fishkill Golf Course and Driving Range, Dogwood Knolls in Hopewell Junction or Par Fore.
In the Town of Fishkill NY there is a nice selection of parks and recreational facilities and lots of sports programs, but there’s so much of the great outdoors around Fishkill, you wouldn’t believe it! As far south as Mahopac and as far east as Patterson lies an enormous forested area, providing a natural playground and preserve, including Fishkill Ridge, part of Hudson Highlands State Park; Sugarloaf Mountain and Fahnestock State Park. There’s even Splash Down Beach, if you like man-made amusement!
Whether it’s block parties on Main Street, fairs at the "rec" building or just hanging out at one of the parks, Fishkill’s friendly folks cultivate a warm, neighborly vibe.
