Homes For Sale In Ancram NY

Ancram NY real estate is rooted in history and coming into its own. A “historic farm community moving forward” is how the Town of Ancram describes itself. The hamlets of Ancram, Ancramdale and Boston Corner, from the bird’s-eye point of view, are primarily farmland and forest. Vistas of long grass lawns, cloud-shadowed mountains, unpaved lanes, hay bales, acres of red thistle and sunflowers, cornfields and curvy, hilly county roads converge on a couple of county roads that bring people in from the cities and other country towns. So, whilst it’s naturally a quiet, old-fashioned-seeming sort of place, with a quaint, triangular town green with a flowerbed, cannon, WWI memorial, flagpole and historical sign indicating the history of the town’s name, Ancram is slowly evolving with the creative input of people who’ve come to enjoy what the locals have prized for a long time.

Ancram NY History and Lifestyle

Founded in September 2000, The Ancram Preservation Group has had a lot to do with the town’s renewal; a private not-for-profit, they’re devoted to maintaining the community’s identity through its historic structures, and there are quite a few, as the town is proud of its history. Ancram comprises a bit more than 27,000 acres of the original 160,000 granted to Robert Livingston the Elder in 1686, whose hometown in Scotland was Ancrum; and the first residents of Ancram were mostly farmers brought here in 1740 and 1741 when several families followed him from Scotland. “Modern” dairy farming came to Ancram with the railroads: Stimulated by the ability to ship milk by rail to New York, more farmers focused on dairy farming and created the large dairy herds which have characterized farming in Ancram since that time. The cows grazing on that nice green grass along the roadside may be descendants of the original dairy herds way back then!

If you’re the outdoorsy type and want to enjoy some of what those cows have got, Ancram has several official options: Lake Taghkanic State Park, the Doodletown Wildlife Management Area, the Drowned Lands Swamp and the 1,700-acre Overmountain Conservation Area, the largest Public Conservation Area in the Columbia Land Conservancy’s portfolio, where ridge-top trails feature spectacular views of the Harlem Valley, Hudson Valley and the Taconics; it includes over 10 miles of trails, where stone walls tell the story of the land’s agricultural past and the variety of rocks provides evidence of the local geological upheavals. The 360-degree vista from the Yellow Trail gazebo, in the midst of a wildflower meadow, is among the best in the region.

For a less energetic, more cultural sort of entertainment don’t miss the intimate Ancram Opera House, looking to Ancram's pastoral character to nurture fervent artistic creation; they present a mix of contemporary theater, alternative cabaret and community programs in a former grange hall, where, inspired by the grange movement, they hope to “forge connection and community and instill a sense of place.”

Ancram Homes For Sale

Just down the road from the Opera House is the historic Simons General Store, where in 2017, painter James Kennedy and ceramic artist Bob Bachler established artists’ studios in their Surface Library Gallery and Atelier. Other local artists include Sally BrodyJoyce Weinstein and Derek Porter.

There’s not a lot of nightlife in Ancram, but there's a standout restaurant, The Farmer’s Wife, established in 2002 when the original farmer’s wife turned her 10-year-old home-kitchen-based business into a café and full-service caterer. The second-generation owners are not the farmer's wife and the farmer, but the farmer's daughter and son-in-law. Their café in Ancramdale is host to a revolving cast of characters, locals and weekenders alike, who stop in for breakfast, lunch and prepared-food takeout, the ingredients of which are sourced from farms down the road, including Chaseholm Farm Dairy and Creamery, makers of small-batch artisanal cheese.

Just to name a few of the dozens of other farms where locals get their produce and more, there’s the Thompson Finch farm, in the family for five generations, specializing in certified organic strawberries, blueberries and apples and a season-long "pick-your-own" operation. Selling greens, eggs and vegetables, Suydam Hills Farm is a new small farm “passionate about developing a sustainable model of forest farming and silvopasture” (integration of trees and grazing livestock operations on the same land). Get your goat cheese and honey at Miracle Spring Farm

And since people don’t live by bread alone, you might like to check out the Hillrock Estate Distillery: “By controlling every aspect of production from planting and harvesting heirloom grains, to smoking our malt, to crafting whiskies in our copper pot still, to aging in small oak barrels and hand bottling, we are able to create the highest quality whiskies reflecting the unique local terroir.”

Of course there are dozens of farms locally; check out the list on the Ancram directory, where you’ll also find writers, contractors, dance directors, builders and several riding and boarding establishments, including A Horse Drawn Affair/Broe FarmThe Horse Institute, Cricket Hill Farm and Kinnitty Capall Stables.
