Generalized, Wassaic real estate is historic charm "personified". Wassaic is the kind of place nearly everyone just loves; with its irregular streets, old houses, a stream running through, huge old trees and art… but not a lot of industry. It’s a quiet hamlet in a pocket of Dutchess County surrounded by low mountains with a few small businesses and a railroad depot (the last stop on the Metro-North Harlem line) to liven things up a bit.
The remnants of Wassaic’s industrial past now lend a historic charm and the beauty of the hand-made to town: from Noah Gridley’s Iron Works remains the wooden Gridley Chapel, Gridley’s office building, and his home. The old Wassaic post office and what once was Sally Tilford’s candy store are both delightful. The current post office building was once the Mahoney & Crossen store.

There's so much to do in Wassaic, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendation on the best things to do in Wassaic.
The sign on the general store in Wassaic says “Calsi’s General Store, “out of respect for the former proprietor,” and there are definitely some of the former proprietor’s goods still there in an old-fashioned jumble with organic foods; a primitive-style, wonderful painting of Wassaic; and books on topics of local interest. Go in for a chat with the owner; she’s fascinating, a long-time local. There’s even a small library in Amenia (about four miles north). To find out about all this, be sure to visit Amenia.net and our Amenia page.
Wassaic is in the valley of the Ten Mile River - how romantic does that sound? It's also just a stone’s throw from the Connecticut border. And the small-town vibe in Wassaic isn’t just a façade; many kids in Wassaic still participate in the 4H Club, Little League, the Amenia Fish and Game club and other activities that have been part of rural country life for decades.
An enormous forested area surrounds Wassaic, and there are so many public places to enjoy it: Wassaic Multiple Use Area, Wassaic Creek/Ten Mile River, Nellie Hill Preserve and West Mountain State Forest, to name a few.
Also easily accessible from Wassaic are the Town of Amenia’s parks and recreation and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, 26+ paved miles from Wassaic to north of the Taghkanic State Park; you’ll always find folks on bicycles when you come to Wassaic. The Wassaic Charcoal Kilns are pretty cool, two beehive-style kilns that survive from Gridley’s Iron Works.
Equestrians enjoy the trail riding that's available in several of the parks and also Kildare Stables and MLS Farm. Charlotte’s is just down the road from there, serving such tempting fare as Mushrooms Wellington with broccoli rabe and Seafood Crepe with a black rice pilaf. There’s good food right in Wassaic, too, in a charming, wooden 1920 building: The Lantern Inn is the local tavern serving surprising, avant garde takes on pizza and drafts from local breweries. Hanging out in their peaceful side yard by the stream is the perfect type of relaxation.
And in case you think the closest new art is in Beacon, there’s a hip art center in the hamlet, the Wassaic Project, which held its first summer festival in Wassaic in 2008. Home to an artists’ residency, the Wassaic Project exists in the 8,000-square-foot 1940s Maxon Mills building; as you climb from floor to floor, not only is there art to see, but the views from the windows as you climb to the seventh floor are entrancing. From their parking lot you cross over to picnic tables at the stream and contemplate the art you’ve seen.
The Four Brothers Drive-In Theater in downtown Amenia is quite unusual as drive-ins go and a great way to spend your Saturday nights. And don't miss Wethersfield garden tour, or explore the trails and historic buildings there.
Wassaic homes for sale could be anything from a 19th-century two-story wooden home set back from Old Route 22 on a nice grassy plot to an enormous tree-covered swath of Wassaic acreage to a 6,000 square foot modern home with far-ranging views. If you’re looking for a Wassaic investment property or land for sale we have local real estate experts who can help with both.
