Milan NY Real Estate

Homes For Sale In Milan NY

Milan real estate is about quiet country living. The Town of Milan's history, like that of much of northern Dutchess County, is based on farming. What makes Milan special is that it has  retained much of its small-town, rural character by virtue of strong zoning and planning regulations that are supported and maintained by its residents.

Milan is still the least populous town in Dutchess County with the fewest people per square mile. There are few commercial or industrial enterprises in the town of Milan, but there is a growing base of professional and home-based business and a strong sense of community.

If living in beautiful, green country is important to you, and you don't mind short drives for provisioning, let us help you find the perfect piece of Milan real estate.

Milan NY History and Lifestyle

Milan Homes For Sale

Milan's history is the history of a place in between… in between the Native American Mahicans to the north of the Roeliff Jansen Kill and the Wappinger tribes to the south of Wappingers Creek; between Red Hook and Pine Plains; between New York City and Albany and between Salisbury, Connecticut's iron mines and the Hudson River… routes of important commercial traffic in the early days of Milan's history.

The Milan Town Supervisor says in his web page welcome, “Individuality, privacy and diversity are highly valued here, and we prefer to avoid suburban development concepts and way of life. We welcome to our community those who enjoy a bucolic lifestyle and share a willingness to sustain it.” Milan has done an amazing job of sustaining its historic buildings. On the Town of Milan Early-American Architecture self-guided driving tour there are 32 buildings to visit within the 36 square miles of hills, hollows and forests comprising the town, some dating to the middle of the 18th century.

Not only the locals but anyone who loves the countryside can partake of the fruits of the agrarian lifestyle that surrounds Milan by visiting its farms and restaurants. When you move to Milan, join the CSA and you’ll receive weekly organic produce and flowers grown at Dreamland Harvest Farm. For superb cider, bourbon, eau-de-vie and gin, there's Branchwater Farms. The quaint Cider Brothers Roadhouse has always been a go-to spot in Milan for their foods, outdoor seating, catering and Horseshoe Brand hot sauce.

Other outdoor activities besides eating in Milan? There’s “therapeutic riding” at the Hidden Hollow Farms Riding Center and Little League at the Town of Milan Recreation Park, plus two baseball diamonds, a basketball court, a pavilion and a playground. To the northeast in the Milan hamlet of Lafayetteville is the 715-acre Lafayetteville Multiple-Use Area, unusual in that it has no marked trails, but the undisturbed lands are perfect for the usual park activities: hiking, bird-watching, reading a book, primitive camping, cross-country skiing in the winter, as well as non-motorized boating on the five-acre Wilbur Pond. Almost as big as Lafayetteville park and not far south is Wilcox Park.

The history of Wilcox Park weaves together some of Dutchess County's historical threads: agriculture, local farms, large estates, immigrants and ambition. Irene Kilmer Wilcox, born in Milan in 1893 to descendants of Germantown Palatines lost her husband in 1942 and her only child, a son, in 1950; to memorialize them, she sold the 615-acre farm that became Wilcox Park to Dutchess County for a nominal $40,000, saying she wanted to “give happiness to people while I’m alive and can see it.” Today visitors can take the hilly, wooded, winding road into Wilcox Park and enjoy its lakes, disc golf, fishing, swimming, paddle and row boats, basketball, bird-watching, picnicking, camping, and hiking and cross-country skiing trails. Happiness indeed!
