Set amidst magnificent, dramatic scenery, Acra’s few businesses, including the post office, are on and off County Route 20, just north of and parallel to Route 23, near its intersection with Hearts Content Road. (Follow that south and you come to Round Top.) Acra is a small hamlet in the town of Cairo, so most of your eateries are in the Town. Visit the lounge and restaurant at Lynch’s Pot O’Gold (a campsite known for its wings and bar), Angel’s Pizza & Mexican, and the Red Rooster Bar & Grill, which serves bar food—burgers, sides, salads, appetizers—with surprises like jalapeño coleslaw. Delightful Bites by Nina is the local bakery. During the summer a short way north is See & Be Kitchen, a provisioner stocking such things as cheese, lovingly handmade breads and pastry, baking supplies, condiments, butter, kombucha, milk and pasta.

Cairo Lockwood State Forest is a good place for adventure; at-large primitive camping is allowed, though there are no official campsites. For other types of exercise locally, there’s Blue Ribbon equestrian centers; Accountable Fitness gym and even a roller-skating rink! Did I mention skiing at Windham just up the road? 

Art is alive in Acra! Dig Wave Farm, where you might do a residency in transmission arts; they’re pioneers of the genre, supporting those who engage with radio as an art form. There’s also a library, transmission arts archive and a grant-funding program. Radio station WGXC 90.7 FM broadcasts from there (and in Hudson).
