Homes For Sale In Acra NY

A hamlet in the Town of Cairo, Acra—that’s Ay-cra—sits at the northern edge of the 18,000-acre Windham-Blackhead Range Wilderness,  the very top of the Catskill Forest Preserve; take a good look at that website, because it promises years of gorgeous recreation in the mountains.

North of here, things flatten out quite a bit; with mountains to the south and farmland to the north, you’re perfectly positioned for your sport of choice or for the landscape you’re in the mood for. If you’re not the intrepid hiker type, what you must do for the spectacular views you’d espy from the Escarpment Trail is drive a few miles west of Acra on Route 23 and stop at what’s called the Five State Lookout. You won’t soon forget what you see from there; go often, just to feast your eyes.

Acra NY Homes For Sale

Acra Homes For Sale

Set amidst all this magnificent, dramatic scenery, Acra’s few businesses, including the post office, are on and off County Route 20, just north of and parallel to Route 23, near its intersection with Hearts Content Road. (Follow that south and you come to Round Top.) Eateries are limited in Acra, but you’ve got the Town of Cairo to supplement the list. Head in the direction of Cairo, and you come upon the lounge and restaurant at Lynch’s Pot O’Gold, a campsite known for its wings and bar. East of that are Angel’s Pizza & Mexican and the Red Rooster Bar & Grill, which serves bar food—burgers, sides, salads, appetizers—with surprises like jalapeño coleslaw and “rooster balls.” Delightful Bites by Nina is the local bakery.

During the summer a short way north is See & Be Kitchen, a provisioner stocking such things as cheese, lovingly hand-made breads and pastry, baking supplies, condiments, butter, kombucha, milk and pasta… and tick-removal kits.

Cairo Lockwood State Forest is a good place to pick up ticks (just kidding) and have fun doing it; at-large primitive camping is allowed, though there are no official campsites. For other types of exercise locally besides what you do at the parks, there’s Blue Ribbon equestrian centers; Accountable Fitness gym and even a roller-skating rink! Did I mention skiing at Windham just up the road?

If you’re starting to think Acra is just another quaint northern Catskills resort town, dig Wave Farm, where you might do a residency in transmission arts; they’re pioneers of the genre, supporting those who engage with radio as an art form. Aside from the residency there’s a library, transmission arts archive and a grant-funding program. Radio station WGXC 90.7 FM broadcasts from there (and Hudson). Cool enough?

The hamlet of Cairo in the Town of Cairo is where you go for the bank, building supply, library, supermarket, gas station, hairdresser or barber, fast food, the liquor store, tanning salon, you know the type of thing. They have a nice town park, Little League and soccer, and you’ll even find some art there, including the Tom Swope Gallery and Rock-A-Billy Tattoos. Here’s a great list of all the “shop-dine” businesses in Cairo.
