Elka Park NY Real Estate

Homes For Sale In Elka Park NY

Situated between Cook Brook, the Schoharie Creek and Roaring Kill and at the foot of the Devil’s Path range, Elka Park NY is renowned for being an 1,100-acre gated “cooperative community” listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Seventeen of the 21 “cottages” built between 1890 and 1896—picture medium-sized Newport wooden cottages—still exist; two were rebuilt in 1997. The 1890 clubhouse was recreated in the mid-1950s after a fire destroyed the original. If you own a home in Elka Park, you’re entitled to dine at the club and take part in its activities as well as avail yourself of the swimming pool and tennis courts, hiking trails and streams.

People also live outside the historic district; not everyone in Elka Park NY lives in a 12-bedroom Victorian. The name Elka Park is used for both the private community and the hamlet around it (formerly called Platte Clove).

Elka Park NY is quite a little world unto itself. You could say that particularly in winter: The main road one takes to Elka Park—Platte Clove Road, which runs from West Saugerties to Hunter—is for all intents and purposes closed from November to April because there is no snow removal. If it doesn’t snow all winter, then you could say the road is open! But even in the best of climates, it is a precipitous road with a major drop-off on one side.

Elka Park Homes For Sale

Elka Park NY & Tannersville NY are both part of the Town of Hunter NY. There’s a local Tops market for grocery shopping and a Village Hardware store, along with some mighty fine restaurants, ski shops, antique emporiums and libraries in Tannersville and Hunter. Winter activities include skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice-fishing and snowmobiling; summer activities include biking, hiking, camping, fishing, golf and swimming at, among other sites, Dibbles Quarry, an abandoned 19th-century quarry in the middle of the woods overlooking a valley vista, and Rip Van Winkle Lake, just south of Route 23.

As for economic development, the Hunter Foundation has rehabilitated over 100 homes and 35 businesses in the region and put over $12 million into the community to promote economic development and tourism. It's due to the Hunter Foundation that Tannersville buildings are painted all those pretty colors! Hunterchamber.org serves to “enhance commerce, connect community members and advance the quality of life” in the area.

Culturally Hunter is home to the Catskill Mountain Foundation, a rich local resource and home to arts programs in film, residencies, performance and education. They run the Orpheum Film & Performing Arts Center, Doctorow Center for the Arts, the Piano Performance Museum and the Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts as well as a "multi-cultural gifts store," the Kaaterskill Shoppe, and a Natural Agriculture farm.
