Situated at the elbow of the Ashokan Reservoir, Shokan is the place to look first if you'd like to live near this fantastically beautiful, 180-foot-deep reservoir and its 44-miles of shoreline. While Shokan is home to a large percentage of NYC's water supply, the reservoir also provides recreation for locals and visitors. Many locals visit the reservoir several times a week to meet up with friends, take in the beautiful scenery, walk, bike, and bird-watch. Stocked each spring with 16,000 brown trout (Ashokan originally meant “place of fish”), the reservoir is a fishing hotspot. Even if your Shokan home is not adjacent to the protected land that surrounds the reservoir, there’s easy access to the Ashokan Station Trailhead right off Route 28 in the middle of town where you can enjoy the relatively new Ashokan Rail Trail (ART), a 11.5 mile trail that runs between West Hurley and Boiceville and provides incredible views of the reservoir.

Beyond the reservoir, Shokan NY is known primarily for the nearby towns that are household names; convenient to Kingston, Woodstock, Mt. Tremper, Phoenicia and Stone Ridge, Shokan is a great place to live for those who want a truly rural lifestyle with access to arts, fun, and food. Want an amazing breakfast? Drive a few minutes northwest to the Phoenicia Diner. Into ceramics? Drive a few minutes northeast to a pottery class at Byrdcliffe in Woodstock. Yoga and healing arts can be had in Uptown Kingston, Woodstock, and Chichester.
That’s not to say Shokan NY doesn’t have anything of its own to offer. Living in the town where you can buy Fruition’s internationally famous, award-winning chocolate right from the makers is nothing short of a miracle! In the same plaza is Village Pizza, and who doesn’t love pizza? Other places locals are happy to have handy are Olive’s Country Store and Café, where you get that on-the-go cup of coffee and egg sandwich; Ming Moon Chinese food; and the Shokan Post Office.
For the vegetarians out there, don’t miss Veggie Oasis, where you can get a super-healthy burrito and a load of antiques to furnish your Shokan home whilst waiting for the take-out! On a more aesthetic note, check out Jennifer Salvemini’s Hinterland, a “design studio, a tea shop, a spice library, a garden-to-table café, a party venue, a field of wildflowers, a blazing bonfire under the stars, and sometimes a quiet place to rest your head.”
Shokan is a hamlet in “low-tax” Olive. Why is it called that? Because New York City and the State of New York are the largest taxpayers in the district. If you move to Shokan, the Ashokan Reservoir and the mountains of the Slide Mountain Wilderness will be your neighbors. With water and mountain views available, Shokan is often home to hidden gems, built to capitalize on the beautiful landscape: farmhouses from an earlier time, old boarding houses that once housed hunters and fisherman, refurbished cabins, impressive projects of modern architects, and super-green, hand-made houses.
A recent search of available properties for sale garnered a 25-acre plot of land in a sparsely populated gated community nestled in a mountain pass with mountain-top views all around; a farm with two farmhouses and three antique barns on 20 acres, complete with two ponds, surrounded by mountains and partially bordering state land; a recently upgraded four-family investment property with year-round tenants; and an 891-square-foot two-bedroom cottage with detached garage. Let a Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty agent help you decide which of the Shokan properties for sale right now is right for you!
