Two other unique historic elements in Pine Hill are the Mill Street and Elm Street stone arch bridges, both hand-built by local mason Matthew G. Thompson circa 1900 employing early 18th-century techniques. The bridges have remained intact and in use since they were built. At one time Pine Hill was known as “the Saratoga of the Catskills” because of its Crystal Spring, still gurgling forth pure water today. The Crystal Spring Water Company operated here for nearly 50 years. And Pine Hill had one of the first rope-tows for skiing in the area and one of the first silent movie houses.
Pine Hill is well known for its summer and winter activities. The town practically sits on the amazing Belleayre Mountain Resort, where, aside from skiing, snowboarding and great restaurants, there are summer activities like the gondola and trails for hiking and biking. The Belleayre Beach at Pine Hill Lake has a white-sand beach, lifeguards, boat rentals, fishing, hiking, camps for kids and picnic pavilions. The region also has lots of swimming holes known to the locals, secrets that will be passed on to you, too, should you live here! For eats right on Main Street (and rooms to put up your overflow guests) you’ll find The Pine Hill Arms and Bar, with sun decks, darts and arcade games, and the cozy Victorian Colonial Inn. Feel like something spicy? Try Tito Bandito’s Taco and Tequila Bar.
The Pine Hill Community Center is a treasury of resources. Their mission speaks volumes: "Celebrating what we have, responding to what we need, together." Trailways and the Ulster County Transit Bus pass by, which means if you make Pine Hill your home you or your weekend guests can get to and from the city without a car. All the Fleischmanns attractions are just minutes away. The Mountain Athletic Club vintage baseball association continues a tradition begun in 1895 when the Fleischmanns (of yeast fame) created a family compound and started the club for members of the pro teams they owned. The Fleischmanns house is now Spillian, a “place for imaginative gatherings.” Stop by Birch Creek Mercantile for locally brewed beer and cider and/or shop their selection of Catskills products.
You won’t feel crowded when you buy Pine Hill real estate; not more than 200 people live in the town. Pine Hill homes for sale are not expensive relative to Woodstock, for instance. It’s a woodland paradise!
