The Columbia County town of Clermont offers some spectacular scenery and real estate. From the rolling farmlands of its interior, to the awe-inspiring views from about three miles of Hudson River frontage, to the Catskills high peaks to the west - owning a home in Clermont means being surrounded with beauty.
One of Clermont's claims to fame is that it was the site of the first public school in the United States! Founded in 1791, the school expanded and became the "Academy". The building can still be seen on Route 9. Right next door are the sweet little one-story Gothic Revival church and the Clermont town hall, both original buildings from before 1870.

Move to Clermont! You'll have plenty of history to share with your house-guests. Clermont was the seat of the famous Livingstons, originally granted 160,000-acres in the Hudson Valley by King George I. Livingstons were signers of the Declaration of Independence and their descendants went on to be Presidents. They also built what is still an integral part of Clerment, Clermont State Historic Site, a beautiful home and park on the Hudson open to the public and famous for its lovely gardens and lilac walk. The site residents use now as a place to get away and take in the incredible views is not, in fact, the original; that one was burned by the British during the Revolutionary War.
Farms have traditionally been Clermont's very life. There’s still a lot of farming going on in Clermont: That Bloomin Farm (floral wreaths), Hearty Roots Farm (eggs and veggies), Red Fern Farm (veggies and flowers), Hudson Valley Organic Garlic Growers and Vosburgh Orchards (apples, veggies, hops and flowers) are all in Clermont. Some of their products are available online and through other retail outlets, and some you can visit and dig that farm vibe while doing some pick-your-own or shopping the quaint wooden stands.
Other outdoor things to do around Clermont? Don’t miss the town parks: Clermont Park and Hettling Park at Clermont, over 26 acres with swings, soccer fields, basketball court, Little League baseball field, trails and a hilltop veterans’ monument with fabulous views of the Catskills.
The Clermont Estates Historic District, a two-mile-long group of seven estates along the Hudson River and Woods Road developed from the mid- to late-19th century, includes prominent residences, substantial grounds and various tenant houses, cottages and out-buildings, which together represent much of the highest valued Clermont real estate. Catskills views across the Hudson River are top-of-the-line in Clermont real estate. But even without the river or mountain views, the beautiful countryside is always a delight, and a Clermont home for sale is bound to be prettily sited no matter where it is in town.
Wherever your Clermont real estate fancies take you - an equestrian property, a barn that you'll turn into a local nightlife venue, a parcel of land to build on, a Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty agent can show you the way to the Clermont home for sale of your fondest dreams.
