Snaking alongside Dutchess County’s Ten Mile River sits the hamlet of Dover Plains NY, in a valley between East and West mountains in the town of Dover NY. Measuring only .69 square miles, the hamlet is home to around 1,200 people and, like many of the small towns in Dutchess County, it’s a dense pocket of civilization in the woods, a hub of activity surrounded by forest and horse farms and homes for sale here offer the best of Upstate NY living.
Considering that there’s been a train station in Dover Plains since 1848, when the New York-Harlem Railroad was established, it’s remarkable that the area is still as bucolic as it is. During rush hour, Metro-North trains leave every 30 minutes from the present-day station, but Dover Plains NY is surrounded by hills, mountains, waterways and parks, and they bestow upon the region a country atmosphere.

The small-town aura of Dover Plains can be felt most strongly in the annual town festivals, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, American Legion Memorial Day Service, J.H. Ketcham Fire Co. Carnival and Parade, Dover Community Day, Halloween Rag-a-Muffin Parade and Holiday Tree Lighting. The town hosts senior programs and youth sports and has a 100+-year-old local library. The Ketcham Memorial Park has baseball diamonds, a pavilion and a large grassy field, all right on the banks of Ten Mile River; and there’s a beautiful meadow at Boyce Park, a playground and facilities for baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis and hiking.
The Appalachian Trail passes through the Town of Dover NY, and there are lots of places to take advantage of the outdoors in and near Dover Plains. In 2016, the Nature Conservancy donated Nellie Hill Preserve to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as the first parcel establishing the Great Thicket National Wildlife Refuge, which spans six states and protects shrub-land and young forest habitat from eastern New York to Maine. A visit to Nellie Hill reveals savannah-like grasslands, wildflowers, sloping meadows, an oak woodland, five springs and two ponds. It’s a hotspot for migratory birds.
Friends and family of conservationist Roger Perry honored his memory by donating the Roger Perry Memorial Preserve to The Nature Conservancy in 2001. At the base of the Berkshires, with a short trail complex and a view over the long ridge-line of East Mountain, it comprises a series of eroded limestone ridges and bedrock outcrops crested by cottonwood trees - it's beautiful and a great escape if you choose to purchase a home for sale with a small yard whose maintenance will allow you to time to roam free!
Also in Dover Plains is the 170-acre Dover Stone Church Preserve down a driveway between two houses, it's home to three miles of nature trails where you can check out unique rock outcroppings, scenic vistas and fauna of the West Mountain ridge, plus the cathedral-like cave that gives the site its name. The Preserve is part of the Great Swamp Watershed, 97 square miles, primarily forest, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the state with 14 miles of navigable waters. It’s been declared a National Historic Landmark, a Critical Environmental Area by Dutchess and Putnam counties, an Important Bird Area by Audubon and a Class I wetland by NYS DEC.
Wassaic Multiple Use Area features 488 acres for hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Due to the largely undisturbed forest, an abundance of wildlife can be seen here ranging from white tail deer and turkey to waterfowl, rabbits and squirrels.
Maple syrup is one of the sweetest things about upstate New York. In Dover Plains NY are two resources for this legendary food: Soukup Farms, “tapping trees since 1955,” and Crown Maple at Madava Farms.
Check out the colonial tap room at The Old Drovers Inn, a bed-and-breakfast which has been an inn since 1750 and was admitted in 1988 to the Relais & Châteaux. In 1962, after filming Cleopatra, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor bought out the entire inn for a romantic getaway in the early days of their courtship!
Enjoy Latin American cuisine at Ana’s and strictly Mexican fare at La Cazuela. From spring through late autumn, don’t miss Kelly’s Creamery and Kelly’s Husband’s Truck; the creamery features artisanal ice cream; the truck’s menu includes creative fare made from locally sourced, fresh ingredients. Two pizza places vie for the locals’ business in nearby Wingdale: STUPID (Savory Tasty Unbelievably Perfect Incredible Delicious) Pizza lives by the motto “clean, fresh, good.” Cousins Woodfire Pizza Café has a huge sandwich selection as part of their menu.
Living in Dover Plains NY means different things for different people, but to everyone it means the countryside. No matter where you buy a home or land parcel - whether in town or on the crest of a ridge - nature is at hand. All kinds of real estate is available here, either a cabin or an A-frame, a multi-family converted farmhouse or a ranch, a reimagined horse barn or a brick mansion.
Here's an example of a recently sold home at one end of the spectrum: up a tree-lined drive a private, architect-designed neo-Greek Revival home with five bedrooms and 6.5 baths on a 21+-acre lot with landscaping designed to emulate an English garden. Another: surrounded by horse farms, country lanes and an apple orchard a traditional six-bedroom home with garden terraces and a Linden-tree-lined allee to an in-ground pool and pond just sold. On the opposide end of the aesthetic spectrum: a “log cabin” with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace on four-plus acres of lawns with a Gunite, salt-water pool sold.
