Pawling NY History and Lifestyle

Pawling Homes For Sale

As we mentioned, Pawling has a great little shopping district that's as connected to the past as it is to the present. In terms of the past, don't miss Pawling’s 1764 Oblong Friends Meeting House, site of the first antislavery movement in America. In terms of the present, the Metro-North Harlem line runs down the middle of the Village of Pawling. It both imparts a particular character and is a convenient way to get in and out of town to both the city and to other Hudson Valley towns! And while the train line has engendered a certain amount of development in Pawling, the bustling area is also surrounded by thousands of acres of pristine green spaces. The Appalachian Trail is available at Nuclear Lake, according to some the most beautiful lake on the AT. The Dover Oak is here - it’s said to be the oldest and largest oak tree on the Trail. Arriving in Pawling feels like emerging from the deep woods into a pocket of civilization fueled by the energy of humanity.

Pawling also boasts at least two other superlatives: Dutcher Golf Course,  the oldest continually operated public golf course in America, and Whaley Lake,  the largest lake in Dutchess County. Then there’s the 1,043-acre Pawling Nature Reserve, the 6,000-acre Great Swamp and West Mountain State Forest, all great spots for getting outside, hiking, riding, canoeing and nature-watching. There are miles of trails in the 73-acre Edward R. Murrow Memorial Park and in the adjacent 292-acre Lakeside Park, which features a dog park, tennis courts, ball fields and Green Mountain Lake for swimming and boating.

Lakeside Park is where members of the community can relax under the stars for Pawling's popular Music by the Lake series every summer. For indoor listening, music-lovers have been enjoying the Pawling Concert Series on the campus of Trinity-Pawling School for more than 45 years. And regardless of how you answer the question,  "To be or not to be into theater?", you may enjoy Pawling Shakespeare Club which has been perpetuating the Bard’s works since 1898!

The visual arts are also represented in Pawling; you can drop in on some of local artists during the annual Art East studio tour or peruse the walls of the various galleries in town. Every summer Pawling hosts hosts of people who come for the FrOGS (Friends of the Great Swamp) Art Show at Lakler Hall on Quaker Hill, and you may find the creations of artists and craftspeople - in addition to farm-fresh produce and other locally made and grown goods - at the weekly Farmers Market that runs from mid-June through October. They’ve got a great collection of vintage post cards at Akin Free Library, housed in a magnificent 1880 stone Victorian atop Quaker Hill, with historical and natural history collections and wonderful documentation of the region’s history and resources.

Pawling NY is making sure the founding mothers and fathers aren’t turning over in their graves watching the town’s progress in the 21st century via several organizations committed to healthy growth and conscientious development: The Pawling Community Foundation, the Oblong Land Conservancy and Oblong Trail Association, the Holmes Whaley Lake Civic Association and the Hurd’s Corners Civic Association are all committed to improving the quality of life for Pawling residents and making sure when you arrive in Pawling, modern and historic are present in equal parts.
