There's so much to do in Hyde Park, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendation on the best things to do in Hyde Park.
Hyde Park NY is most famous for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library & Museum, Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill and the Vanderbilt mansion. Lucky residents of Hyde Park have access to these beautiful places on a daily basis as well as other parks, activities and community groups. Hyde Park may have history but it's also alive.
Some take their exercise on the Top Cottage Trail. Leaving Top Cottage, there's an additional trail through Val-Kill onto Roosevelt Farm Lane, the FDR estate, Hyde Park’s Riverfront Park and the Vanderbilt Mansion… quite a lovely trail with the promise of Hudson River and Catskills views.
Another trail of interest leads to the woods of Hackett Hill Park and the New Guinea Community, once a prosperous settlement of freed and escaped slaves and a Hudson Valley site of note related to African-American history. Original stone walls and several foundations of late-18th- through mid-19th-century homes can still be seen.
The Vanderbilt parklands are decorated by Andre Parmentier's graceful landscape design, which has been protected by local green thumbs who've made an impressive effort to make sure it doesn't disappear. After Frederick Vanderbilt’s death, when no buyers could be found for the estate, FDR arranged for Congress to make it part of the National Park Service, but for one reason and another, including WWII, no work was done in the gardens until the 1970s, when a grant was received to partially improve them. Then, in 1984, three local gardeners started the F.W. Vanderbilt Garden Association, and it's still going strong. It’s quite a kick to buy plants at their annual Memorial Day Weekend fundraiser; what you bring home to your Hyde Park home could be a descendant of an original Vanderbilt garden bloom from the 1800s!
Hyde Park is home to the Culinary Institute of America— another of Hyde Park’s world-famous places—where locals have the opportunity to taste the inspirational creations of the students and staff at one of their eateries: American Bounty, the Bocuse and the Apple Pie Bakery Café among them. People make pilgrimages to the CIA from everywhere in America. If you plan ahead, you could be a regular diner there!
The ride north out of the urban part of Hyde Park NY takes you to a very different place - into the woods at the hamlet of Staatsburg to what’s known as the Mills-Norrie State Park, that is, the Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park and the Ruth and Ogden Mills Memorial State Park. As you go north the landscape becomes more rural with much less development; that’s also true when you go east from Hyde Park; it’s mostly woods and farmland. If you're looking to dine right in Staatsburg, there’s a lovely little restaurant there, the River & Post.
How about a sunset float on the Hudson? Hyde Park Landing, where the Crum Elbow Creek meets the river is Hyde Park Landing, where the Andros family has run a marina since 1963 for everything from year-to-year slip rental to picnic areas for those ships that pass in the night.
Hyde Park real estate at its best offers the promise of Hudson River and Catskills views, one beautiful Hyde Park home that was recently for sale had the river at its doorstep with long hardwood decks built to take in the comings and goings on the river and a lovely screened-in porch. Another recent Hyde Park home for sale overlooked woods and farmland. Whatever your landscape preference (except perhaps for dessert), we can help you find it in Hyde Park.
