There's so much to do in Kent, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendations on the best things to do in Kent.
New York City and New York State own nearly 40 percent of the 43-square-miles that make up this Putnam County town. A good deal of the land in Kent is environmentally protected. In the early 1900s, a branch of the Croton River was dammed to create Boyds Corner and West Branch reservoirs, part of NYC’s water supply system. The protection that resulted and is still in place all these years later is highly valued by people living in Kent NY as it forces the continuance of the town’s rural feeling and because it lowers their tax bills.
Almost half of Kent NY is open space. In Kent’s rugged, sparsely inhabited western region is Clarence Fahnestock State Park. In the east you’ll find Wonder Lake State Park. White Pond Multiple Use Area and Big Buck Mountain Multiple Use Area are in the north. California Hill State Forest lies in the southern part of town. Almost smack-dab in the middle is Ninham Mountain Multiple Use Area. That’s 17,000+ acres of wilderness, much of it protected by the NYC DEP. Less than 400 people live in each square mile of Kent (compared to 27,000 in NYC, in case you were wondering).
More than half of the population of Kent—a wooded and hilly region generally—lives in the rural hamlet of Lake Carmel, sited around the 1.6-mile-long Lake Carmel. Kent, which has been described as “a lot of neighborhoods around lakes", is home to Barrett Pond, Sagamore Lake, Pine Pond, China Pond, Palmer Lake, Seven Hills Lake and White Pond. In years gone by, when farming in the area began to decline, those lakes became vacation destinations of city folk anxious to escape the heat. Little by little, the summer homes became full-time residences. When the Taconic Parkway was built in the 1930s, Kent became even more easily accessible.
The Taconic traverses the westernmost portion of Kent NY, and Interstate 84 the northeastern corner, so although the description of Kent we’ve given makes it sound a bit remote, you can easily hop on the highway to go Upstate or down for work or recreation. Fishkill is less than a half-hour to the west, Danbury the same distance east.
If you don’t go gallivanting but prefer to stay in town and get involved, there are opportunities in Kent: How about volunteering with the Kent Lakes Association, which concerns itself with the water quality of the lakes in town? Adults and teens alike are encouraged to join the Kent Public Library’s Friends of the Library group. Those with a cultural bent will enjoy helping out at Arts on the Lake. If you prefer real excitement and want to make a big contribution, the Kent Fire Department is made up of volunteers.
The Town of Kent has a very active recreation department, so there are lots of ways to meet people and stay busy in town. There are adult boot camp and yoga classes, a ski and snowboard club; youth leagues for basketball, soccer, baseball and bowling; special events around Halloween and Easter and an annual Community Day Weekend. They also offer youth gymnastics, skating and zumba, among other things.
You’ll like Kent if you’re interested in lake-life that doesn’t include the noise of outboard motors: No engines are allowed on many of the town’s lakes because of the watershed. Of course not all homes in Kent are on lakes… just a whole bunch of them!
At the time of writing there were three Kent homes for sale under $200k and 14 under $300k. And there’s everything in between, including Kent land for sale if you prefer to build.
Luxury properties are a regularity in Kent NY, particularly in rustic Sedgewood. The Sedgewood Club on China Pond, with a 1928 golf course, tennis courts and a beach, offers membership to residents and non-residents for a fee. It’s a true escape in the style of a slower time that was (perhaps) a bit more fun. For example, a Kent NY home for sale on China Pond with four-bedrooms, three-baths, and 100 feet of lake frontage was recently listed for $1,299,000.
