Carmel, NY is a place of lovely waterscapes and equally lovely real estate. In the midst of Putnam County, where local roads wind their way around bodies of water that range in size from a few acres to hundreds, Carmel boasts a lifestyle built around the topography. Lake Gleneida and the West Branch Reservoir surround the hamlet of Carmel. There's so much to do in Carmel, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendations on the best things to do in Carmel.
While Carmel, New York abuts busier Westchester to the south, it has retained a relaxed rural atmosphere in keeping with its history. Much of the land in the hamlet is part of the NYC watershed, which has limited both residential and commercial development and helped Carmel retain its essential character. Tree-filled residential neighborhoods are neatly placed here and there, and the commercial areas are contained to a few main thoroughfares.
Carmel commuters catch Metro North’s Harlem line at the South East Station, which has been delivering visitors and residents to and from the city since the late 19th century. People loved Carmel for the same reasons then that they do now: in Carmel you’re ideally placed for that lovely mix of country and city lifestyles. Both the Hamlet of Carmel and the town have beautiful older homes with impressive detail and architecture. Carmel is also convenient; hop on Route 22 in Patterson for a completely rural, woodsy drive north to the tiny village of Wassaic, or head east on Route 84 and be over the Connecticut border in minutes.
Residents of Carmel enjoy access to outdoor entertainment off the water as well as on. Living in Carmel means you might spend a day on the Putnam Trail, perfect your stroke at any of the four local golf courses or enjoy a day of fishing for trout at Lake Gleneida. There’s riding at River Run Farm or Crossroads Equestrian Center, Sycamore Park, Sedgewood Country Club and the 14,000+-acre Fahnestock State Park just to the west.
The Town of Carmel NY Recreation & Parks Department is an important part of the community with many program offerings for residents; ski and snowboard lessons at Thunder Ridge Ski Area, classes in everything from holiday wreath-making to yoga and lots of programs for children and teens. Throughout the year Carmel residents meet up at the Harvest Fest, Drive-In Movies, Halloween Party, and the Sunset Concert. The town’s got a big heart! The Hamlet of Carmel Civic Association adds to the fun with an annual Halloween Ragamuffin Parade and menorah lighting and “Holiday on the Lake” festivities in December, when nearly 100 trees are decorated around Lake Gleneida. Likewise, the Reed Memorial Library, the oldest library building in Putnam County, offers programs for residents, books and a gathering place with history.
Along with plentiful lakefront comes lakefront dining! On the south shore of Lake Mahopac are some delightful places to dine out. Picture living across the lake and casually motoring over in your boat on a summer’s evening for a Spicy Margarita at Lakeside Grille, Geisha Maki Roll at Kobu Asian Bistro or a Classic Caesar and Penne Alla Vodka at Lake House Restaurant and Bar.
Carmel NY is a great place to call home!
Carmel’s history as a pastoral getaway means that there are often older homes for sale with significant acreage, sometimes with their own small lake or pond on offer. Waterfront, water-view, and water-access properties are both common and comparatively affordable in Carmel which might offer anything from a $1.7M modern lake-side home to an adorable lake-access cottage with four bedrooms and three baths for $400,000.
