Homes For Sale In Pine Plains NY

Pine Plains is quite simply delightful! Pine Plains real estate? Delightful too! Always has been.

Just before Thanksgiving of 2021 Martha Stewart had dinner at a little French restaurant in Pine Plains called Champêtre. If Pine Plains NY had been under most of the Hudson Valley's radar compared with other Dutchess County towns such as Rhinebeck or Hudson, her visit may have heralded the end of an era. The opening of the Stissing Center (a community hub and arts center) in 2019 had already attracted a lot of new attention as the next important cultural center between Bard College in Red Hook and Millerton.

As the local experts in Hudson Valley real estate we've adored the village of Pine Plains for decades and would love to show you all the little things about it that add up to it being a very special place.

Pine Plains NY History and Lifestyle

Pine Plains Homes For Sale

Perhaps if people knew more about Pine Plains, its fame would have spread more rapidly. Many don't realize there's a polo club there, which makes perfect sense as Pine Plains NY has long been home to thriving horse farms which currently include the Western Circle G Ranch and English Taconic Equestrian. Of course, the Hudson Valley is packed with horse farms, but Mashomac is the only club between Patterson and Schenectady; score one for Pine Plains!

Aside from riding, there’s plenty of opportunity for everyone to take advantage of the magnificent Dutchess County landscape in Pine Plains. For instance, there’s Stissing Mountain Multiple Use Area which has campsites and trails. Visit Thompson Pond Preserve, a flourishing habitat for birds and plants, protected by the Nature Conservancy. Pine Plains is the home of Stissing Fire Tower, a destination for Hudson Valley hikers. Just south of town is the Buttercup Farm Audubon Sanctuary; if you’ve always hoped to see just what a pileated woodpecker or ruby-throated hummingbird looks like, this is the place to do it.

Residents of Pine Plains have access to swimming at Stissing Lake during the day. They might choose to hear a concert at the Fisher Center in the evening. Cross-country skiing is available at Wilcox Memorial Park on February afternoons. The shopping at Hammertown Barn is Hudson-Valley-famous. Pine Plains residents might visit A New Leaf bookstore and Demeter Home on a rainy spring day and see an indie movie at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck later in the afternoon. When they don’t feel like leaving Pine Plains, they might have a meal on the deck of Guacamole Grill after sundown or check out the arts and crafts at Gallery & Goods, see what Stissing Theater Guild has been rehearsing, pick up a book at the library and something to drink at the wine shop

Pine Plains is home to working farms where farm-visitors can buy local; try cow cheese from Chaseholm Farm, milk and yogurt from Ronnybrook Farm and goat cheese from Miracle Springs. Full Circus Farm is a certified organic farm growing fruits and veggies and running on horse-power! You also might like to see where Dutch Schultz (an infamous American mobster) once had his bootlegging operation and try a few legal sips at Dutch’s Spirits distillery and tasting room.

Even without these activities to distract you, Pine Plains is a lovely town with friendly people supporting one another: the community distributes turkeys to those in need at Thanksgiving and Christmas; delivers meals to those who are house-bound; they organize youth sports; they have a holiday decorating day and parade of lights; in short, Pine Plains is a town where people live, work, play and get together to have fun and help one another… a nice place to live!
