The Town of Union Vale, a quiet, rural part of Dutchess County, is a perfect spot for those who love rolling hills and picturesque farmland but don’t want to be too far from a metropolitan center (in this case Poughkeepsie, about 12 miles west). Everywhere you look in Union Vale, your eyes rest on beauty.
Union Vale can boast of Tymor Park, at nearly 500 acres the largest municipal park in New York! It’s a great resource in a beautiful setting, with over 12 miles of trails, ice rinks, an equestrian center, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a senior center and lots more, including year-round full-day, half-day and after-school programs. It’s wonderful to think that being a resident in Union Vale gives you access to such a fantastic park. The Senior Citizens and Union Vale Parks & Recreation centers are also sited there, set in historic farm buildings.
As the local experts in Union Vale real estate, let us show you around!
Union Vale Department of Parks and Recreation hosts many activities and community events throughout the year at Tymor Park and elsewhere, such as Community Day, Oktoberfest and an Easter Egg Hunt. A private Union Vale site that’s gotten a lot of attention at holiday time is ERDAJT Holiday Light Display; they raise money for charity with the one of the largest holiday light displays in the world!
A different kind of place for a quiet outing in Union Vale NY is the wonderful old Potter Corners Burying Ground, where the oldest stone indicates a 1785 burial. That person may have been born in the 17th century! Or maybe they were born in 1716, the year the town was founded from the Beekman Patent.
One of the oldest buildings in town, circa 1740, was built by the first European settlers in the place, a couple named Emigh. They originally bought land from Native Americans encompassing much of the present towns of Fishkill, Beekman, Dover and Union Vale. It turned out the land was covered by the another land grant, but they were allowed to retain about 15 acres in the Clove Valley, where they built their farm. Their stone house was preserved on land now owned by National Grid, also site of the family burial ground.
At one time the Dutchess & Columbia Railroad stopped at Verbank Station, where there was a post office, two stores, a church and a few dwellings. These days there’s no railroad depot in Union Vale (Dover Plains is the closest) and not a lot of shopping, but LaGrangeville is the town’s southwestern neighbor, and there’s quite a bit of commerce there. To the north is the village of Millbrook and to the south is Pawling, if you’re looking for the type of place where you can run into neighbors on the quaint main street, enjoy a nice meal, see some art, hear a concert or browse boutiques.
What to do in Union Vale NY? How about volunteering and taking part in the town activities? At the time of writing the town is looking for volunteers for the Conservation Advisory Council, the Board of Assessment Review and the Planning Board. On the town website people who need help or know someone who does can sign up for Meals On Wheels, another volunteer opportunity, along with the Union Vale Fire Company.
