The Dutchess County hamlet of LaGrangeville, one of six hamlets in the town of LaGrange, sits at the intersection of three busy roads: the Taconic State Parkway and state routes 82 and 55. The confluence of these roads has led to a certain amount of business and construction, but the area is still primarily fields and forest, a rural suburb of Poughkeepsie, if you will, sprinkled with old barns and wooden farmhouses, stately old mansions and rolling meadows.
The town was originally known as Freedom when established in 1821, but because of confusion at the post office owing to so many New York towns being called Freedom, at the suggestion of a local patriot the town was renamed LaGrange, after the Marquis de Lafayette’s home outside of Paris.
The LaGrange Area Historical Society, whose mission is to “Preserve, Protect and Maintain our circa-1860 One-Room Schoolhouse and to Educate the Community about our History,” is home to the kind of small-town spirit that nourishes a community like LaGrangeville. Other important community resources are available at LaGrange Library, where, aside from the wonderful fact of being able to borrow books, movies and more, they offer classes in cooking, art and crafts; a book club, singalong, yoga and storytime. There’s a Pleasant Valley/LaGrange Senior Drop-In Center and the Union Vale Senior Citizens, who meet weekly at the Vale Senior Center in LaGrangeville. An annual seniors’ event providing access to health screenings and local resources is the Senior Golden Gathering.

There are two parks right in LaGrangeville: Stringham Park and LaGrange Park. The 70-acre Stringham Park is home to the LaGrange Soccer Club and the Arlington LaGrange Lacrosse Club. It has 10 soccer fields and facilities for lacrosse, baseball/softball and basketball, a pavilion and gazebo, playground, picnic tables, pond fishing, walking trails and the Rotary Club’s 9/11 Memorial Garden. In January there’s a Story Walk at Keith’s Pond, and every February the American Heart Association hosts a Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Walk. LaGrange Park, running alongside Jackson Creek, is home to LaGrange Youth Baseball and Softball Leagues. There’s also a golf club in town, the Links at Union Vale; an equestrian center and a public airport.
Poughkeepsie being just 10 miles away, and with three major roads converging at the town center, all major amenities and services are conveniently close at hand. But you can get food and more right in town at some of the small markets featuring locally grown goods. There’s Hitsman Farm, open July through October selling sweet corn, hay and farm-made maple syrup. At Limar’s Garden Center not only do they sell plants and gardening supplies from May until Christmas, but the farmers’ market features fruits, vegetables, honey, maple syrup, baked goods and a Holiday Indoor Market.
Locally produced agricultural products are found year-round at the Taste New York Market at the historic Todd Hill Service Station, right on the Taconic Parkway. Sponsored by the Dutchess County Cornell Cooperative Extension, the market features local dairy products, granola, cider, eggs, condiments and other various artisanal inventory; an outdoor farmers’ market is held there June through October.
As for getting out to wine and dine, there’s a good selection of restaurants: Right in LaGrangeville are five pizzerias, Chinese, Mexican, Greek, American, a sports bar and a diner. At Zoe’s Ice Cream Barn watch them through an observation window churning ice cream year-round (using only Hudson Valley Fresh dairy products.) Also on the menu are sandwiches, sides, soups and salads.
