When asked what’s the best thing about Cornwall-on-Hudson NY by a potential homebuyer who's considering buying real estate there, it would be hard to come up with just one answer; there are at least two. The best things are the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain. It’s such a fantastic juxtaposition, following County Route 218 out of the busy, densely populated village and suddenly being at the eternal Hudson with the steeply climbing rocky mountain face on the other side. The road becomes Storm King Highway, and the view is one you won’t forget. Ever. It’s breathtaking.
The waterfront in Cornwall-on-Hudson, known for several hundred years as Cornwall Landing, is relatively peaceful compared to the road leading into the Storm King Mountain wilderness. Any day of the week you’ll find folks setting out in their boats from the landing or from Cornwall Yacht Club and relaxing at Donahue Memorial Park, where you can hear beautiful music all summer, thanks to the Village Bandstand concerts. Dreaming the hours away, soaking up the view from Cornwall Landing, could become your new favorite thing.

Not all the Village Bandstand concerts, nor all the views, are at the waterfront; some of the series’ concerts are in town at the gazebo at the intersection of Hudson Street and River Avenue. The Town of Cornwall NY and the area surrounding Cornwall-on-Hudson offer sweeping views of Black Rock Forest, Schunnemunk Mountain, the Storm King Art Center and the Hudson River, which you can see from various locations within the town, not just from the waterfront. The scenic, winding roads and the historic homes and small farms nestled in the valley contribute to Cornwall-on-Hudson’s visual vibrancy and quality of life.
A short way back up the hill from the concert gazebo sits the Cornwall-on-Hudson NY village hall, where you can find the village History Room. Scenic Hudson began here. There are several historic homes in Cornwall-on-Hudson NY, some on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Riverbank Historic House Museum, the Adams-Chadeayne-Taft Estate; and Cherry Croft, the Amelia Barr House.
As early as 1770 and well into the 20th century, Cornwall Landing was a busy industrial and commercial hub where timber was processed, boats were built and bricks were made. Trains and steamboats ferried freight and passengers to and from NYC, establishing once and for all the popularity of Cornwall-on-Hudson NY as a place to live and do business.
These days the community keeps busy taking care of itself and the visitors who flock to Cornwall-on-Hudson. The Riverfront Committee members make it their job to enhance Donahue Memorial Park by landscaping and coordinating the annual Riverkeeper Sweep clean-up at the waterfront. The comprehensive plan committee met 30 times in three years to collectively envision the village’s future. The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley has a site in Cornwall-on-Hudson NY, the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum is always looking for volunteers and the children’s summer rec program is a win-win for kids and adults.
