Homes For Sale In Callicoon NY

The friendly Town of Callicoon NY website announces the town as an agricultural community amidst rolling valleys and mountains. The town sits along a beautiful stretch of The Delaware River - it is central to the town's history and to its current culture. It is also central to the desirability of the town's real estate.  Callicoon NY is a hamlet of the Town of Delaware NY, a corner of Sullivan County that grows more popular day by day.

If you drive into the hamlet of Callicoon NY along Route 97, you can appreciate the poetic charm of the Delaware River, as the road winds beside it for miles before you get to town. When you finally reach the hamlet, you’ll find there aren’t many places that are more obviously deserving of the Historic District label. The hamlet of Callicoon NY is the kind of place where you shoot photos as you come through for the first time. Beautiful, historic buildings, both residential and commercial, like Peck’s Market and the Sullivan County Democrat newspaper building give Callicoon a special character.

In 1978, Federal legislation created the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River,  monitoring the water quality and bringing environmental sensitivity to the fore whilst encouraging canoeing, kayaking, swimming, bird-watching— eagles love the Delaware —and simply enjoying the river’s habitats, sounds, and loveliness. The river is an ever-present participant in Callicoon residents' daily lives.

Callicoon Homes For Sale

Callicoon homes are in demand because of the town's charming character.

The Callicoon Downtown Historic District comprises 69 buildings, sites and structures on Upper and Lower Main streets, Highview and Mitchell avenues, River and Hospital roads and parts of Bridge Street and NYS Route 97. A few of the businesses in those structures are the Callicoon Brewing Co. in the groovy old Olympia Hotel, serving craft (and other) beers and a specialty menu; The Raleigh, a farm-to-table restaurant stressing sustainability; the Kitchen Table Café, a coffee shop with baked goods and everything made from scratch; and the Callicoon Pantry, where “inclusivity, community, sustainability and kindness are at the core of our purpose.”

A railroad cutting through the center of a Catskills town is not unusual - in fact, it's fairly standard. But the fact the part of town it comes through in Callicoon is on a hill does make it feel remarkable. At the top of the hill two enormous wooden structures await, the Western Hotel and Catskill Provisions Distillery. Today, Catskill Provisions has a tasting room for their spirits, plus wine, beer and a menu centered around local farm ingredients. The Western Hotel, built in 1852 is a boutique hotel, bar and restaurant beloved by locals and visitors.

One restaurant frequented by locals right on the Callicoon Creek is Ollie Grey’s, a favorite where they serve soft ice cream year-round as well as other tasty foods made from scratch. Callicoon Caffe, where you can get all-day breakfast, has the best views in town, overlooking the confluence of the Callicoon Creek and Delaware River, and they’re right next door to the site of the Callicoon Farmers Market at Callicoon Creek Park, which for more than 20 years has been a “producer-only” market, meaning vendors either grow or produce their own goods and operate within 75 miles of the hamlet. Vendors include Andersen’s Maple Farm and Eminence Road Farm Winery, both from Long Eddy; and Callicoon NY's own Tonjes Farm Dairy

The Callicoon Porch FestCallicoon Walking Tours, the Delaware Youth Center, the Western Sullivan Public Library, Callicoon Theater, the Farm Arts Collective and Lander’s River Trips are just some of the groups that keep Callicoon NY on its toes year-round.
