Homes For Sale In Callicoon NY

The plain but friendly Town of Callicoon NY website announces the town as an agricultural community amidst rolling valleys and mountains. Somehow it fails to mention the Delaware River, a most beautiful stretch of water next to which the hamlet of Callicoon NY sits in quaint and historic comfort. And do you know why that is? Because the hamlet of Callicoon NY is part of the Town of Delaware NY! Callicoon Center NY is in the Town of Callicoon NY, as well as North Branch NY, Youngsville NY and Jeffersonville NY, where the town offices are. But the history of the towns of Callicoon NY and Delaware NY run together with the Delaware River, a river which naturally affected Callicoon’s history….

From 1764, the lumber rafting industry lasted until 1922, stripping the region of its timber and changing it from a forested wilderness into a land of dairy farms and small settlements. When the trains came, the site became known as Callicoon Depot and served as a staging area for the building of the Erie Railway’s Delaware Division. There’s still a historic railroad depot there. Everything was abundance, and even when, in 1888, a fire destroyed most of the prosperous Main Street neighborhood, it was rebuilt, grander than before.

As railway travel gave way to the private motorcar, Callicoon NY  (which dropped “Depot” in 1906) went into something of a decline, and not even the tourism industry regrouped until the late 1960s, when more people started camping, and inns once again lined the country roads. Federal legislation in 1978 created the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River,  monitoring water quality and bringing environmental sensitivity to the fore whilst encouraging canoeing, kayaking, swimming, bird-watching—the place is swarming with eagles—and simply enjoying the river’s habitats and loveliness.

If you drive into the hamlet of Callicoon NY along Route 97, you can appreciate the poetic charm of the Delaware River, as the road winds beside it for miles before you get to town. When you finally reach the hamlet, you’ll agree there aren’t many places that are more obviously deserving of the Historic District label. The hamlet of Callicoon NY is the kind of place where you shoot photos as you come through the first time, simply because there’s so much that’s attractive and old-fashioned. You see these amazing, huge old buildings, not just residences, but businesses, like Peck’s Market and the Sullivan County Democrat newspaper building.

The railroad cutting through the center is not unusual, but the fact that that part of town is a steep hill makes it remarkable. You head up that hill, and two more enormous wooden structures stare down at you, the Western Hotel and Catskill Provisions Distillery. Catskill Provisions has a tasting room for their spirits, plus wine, beer and a menu contrived from local farm ingredients. The Western Hotel was built in 1852 and thankfully wasn’t destroyed in 1888; it’s now a boutique hotel, bar and restaurant.

The Callicoon Downtown Historic District comprises 69 buildings, sites and structures on Upper and Lower Main streets, Highview and Mitchell avenues, River and Hospital roads and parts of Bridge Street and NYS Route 97. Some of the businesses in those structures are the Callicoon Brewing Co. in the groovy old Olympia Hotel, serving craft (and other) beers and a specialty menu; The Raleigh, a farm-to-table restaurant stressing sustainability; the Kitchen Table Café, a coffee shop with baked goods and everything made from scratch; and the Callicoon Pantry, where “inclusivity, community, sustainability and kindness are at the core of our purpose.”

The one restaurant right on the Callicoon Creek is Ollie Grey’s, a local favorite where you have hard and soft ice cream year-round as well as other good food made from scratch. Callicoon Caffe, where you can get all-day breakfast, has the best view in town, overlooking the confluence of the Callicoon Creek and Delaware River, and they’re right next door to the site of the Callicoon Farmers Market at Callicoon Creek Park, for more than 20 years a “producer-only” market, meaning vendors either grow or produce their own goods and operate within 75 miles of the hamlet. Vendors include Andersen’s Maple Farm and Eminence Road Farm Winery, both from Long Eddy; and Callicoon NY's own Tonjes Farm Dairy

In between all those meals you’ll want something entertaining or enlightening to distract you, and Callicoon NY has a lot going on. The Callicoon Porch FestCallicoon Walking Tours, the Delaware Youth Center, the Western Sullivan Public Library, Callicoon Theater, the Farm Arts Collective and Lander’s River Trips are just some of the groups that keep Callicoon NY on its toes.

If you’re a golfer you’ll be happy to know about the Villa Roma course (Villa Roma being one of the largest local employers); and there are several riding establishments, including Diehl Me In Performance HorseBridle Hill Farm and Stone Wall Farms
