History goes hand in hand with the future in Wappingers Falls. A public park since 1891, Mesier Park is a village green full of tall old trees, and very pretty it is, too. Many residents use it daily for strolling or picnicking on the lawn. In its center is the circa-1745 Mesier Homestead, in which Victorian details disguise the original Dutch fieldstone construction. It serves as a home for museum collections which include wonderful Native American artifacts, old Wappinger post cards and a gift shop filled with local art, books on Wappinger and Hudson Valley history and sweet gifts for children.
Post cards at the Mesier house document what was the Garner Print Works and Dutchess Bleachery, a large brick factory enclave right on the creek that employed a good percentage of Wappingers Falls’ residents from 1830 until the early 20th century; the buildings that remain are now known as Market Street Industrial Park. If you wander down Market Street to McKinley Street you can reach the Park by crossing the late-19th-century McKinley Street Bridge, at which point you’ll find yourself near Lee Burns Photography studio and the Design Library, whose textile collections, dating from the 1750s to the present, still serve as inspiration to the fashion, home furnishings, wall covering, graphic arts and paper product industries.
From Market Street Industrial Park, as from many other points in the village, you can hop onto the Wappinger Greenway Trail. It's a 10+-mile loop of on- and off-road trails that meanders from the cultural, to natural, to historic sites within Wappingers Falls NY. One of the most memorable of these last is the Grinnel Library, a central ornaments of the Wheeler Hill Historic District, along with the post office (one of five post offices in New York State whose design and construction were monitored by President Franklin D. Roosevelt).
One restaurant has the good fortune to sit above the creek and offer its diners views - the di’ Vine Wine bar. There are other types of business along the water: Wash with Joe has created something unique with their body-care blends of essential oils and… wait for it… coffee. Wappingers Falls Hydroelectric, “local green power since 1909,” harnesses the creek water—just like they did in the old days! —and sells the generated electricity to its customers.
On the west side of Wappinger Lake there’s a good antique shop, and just north of there, Café Maya, a savory mix of Mexican and Mayan foods—don’t miss the pineapple guacamole! Keep north and you’ll discover the serenity and dignified beauty of the Wappingers Falls Rural Cemetery, with its stones like old sculpture. Just near the cemetery is Canale Memorial Ball Field for Little League and playground lovers.
If play means “theater” to you, Wappingers Falls has hosted the County Players at the Falls Theatre since 1958; they’ve given over 200 performances and are still going strong, with offerings including “not your grandmother’s” Price and Prejudice, by Kate Hamill; George M. Cohan’s Seven Keys to Baldpate and The Price, by Arthur Miller.
There are several dance schools in Wappingers Falls, including Fred Astaire Dance Studios, Betty Jean’s Dance and Wappingers Dance Educators.
Dancing in the street is not out of the question at Wappingers Falls’ annual summer celebrations, like the Festival at the Falls and the July 4th weekend Wappinger Community Days, with a parade, rides, music, arts and crafts vendors and of course, the pièce de resistance, fireworks! Other summer fun: folks bring their blankets, chairs and picnics to the Summer Concert Series at Brexel-Schlathaus Park and the Mesier Summer Concert and Movie Series at Mesier Park. In winter there’s an annual Sinterklaas celebration at the Mesier Homestead.
Finally, not strictly speaking in Wappingers Falls but just south of Reese Park, is the Obercreek Brewery, which is a really relaxed place to hang out and enjoy their French Press (American stout with coffee, yum) and oak-aged Retention ale.
