Homes For Sale In Poughkeepsie NY

Poughkeepsie NY real estate offers the opportunity to purchase everything from a beautiful Victorian surrounded by other beautiful Victorians to a condominium in a renovated brick industrial building; from a small and charming two-story home originally built for local factory workers to something grander with Hudson River Views. As the local experts in Hudson Valley real estate, we're here to share the character and real estate of one of our favorite small cities with you.

The City of Poughkeepsie was once the influential capital of New York State. (from 1777-1783.) The only other Dutchess County city besides Beacon, it’s surrounded by the larger Town of Poughkeepsie, which stretches about 10 miles along the eastern side of the Hudson River. Ascending an incline from the banks of the river and occupying more than 30 square miles, Poughkeepsie’s a densely populated, thriving center of commerce and culture, a center of Dutchess County life long before IBM or the Poughkeepsie Galleria moved in.

Poughkeepsie NY History and Lifestyle

Poughkeepsie Homes For Sale

Poughkeepsie NY sits about half-way between Albany and New York City and has a biography of “first's” and “oldest's.” For instance, the Poughkeepsie Journal is the oldest newspaper in New York State and the third oldest in the country. Bardavon 1869 Opera House is the oldest continuously operating theater in New York State and one of the oldest in the country, and the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center is only two years younger.

The earliest settlement in Poughkeepsie was around the present location of Market Street, with what is now Union Street a footpath leading to the Union Store on the banks of the Hudson River. Forty-two acres of that area are now the Union Street Historic District, the first Poughkeepsie property to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There are six other historic districts in Poughkeepsie; with Union Street, they equal roughly 250 acres of architectural styles ranging from the early 19th through the early 20th century. The Garfield Place Historic District contains some of Poughkeepsie’s most beautiful residences, large wooden houses set off by trees and lawns in the center of dense Poughkeepsie real estate.

The Arlington District is one of the most hip and vibrant in Poughkeepsie, the central neighborhood to Vassar College and its Loeb Art Center, Skinner Hall, Powerhouse Theater and Vassar Golf Course. You’ll meet more than college students at the countless restaurants, bars and shops of the district. Marist College and SUNY Dutchess also make their homes in Poughkeepsie, and the Culinary Institute of America is just north of Poughkeepsie in Hyde Park

Matthew Vassar left several legacies to Poughkeepsie besides the college, including 44 acres of land for the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, since 1853 the final home of Poughkeepsie notables, including the Smith Brothers, whose cough drop factory was a workplace for many locals until it closed in 1972. Wandering around the now-165-acre enclave of stately trees and ponds you’ll find graves of Alexander Hamilton’s relatives, several members of the U.S. House of Representatives; Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz; and Matthew Vassar himself.

Another Poughkeepsie oasis is Vassar’s 20-acre Springside. In 1850, Matthew Vassar purchased the property and hired Andrew Jackson Downing to design his country estate; it’s the only landscape of Downing’s, one of the founders of landscape architecture in America, to survive largely intact. Springside, a National Historic Landmark, is a site on the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail.

The Town of Poughkeepsie has 20+ parks; there are 18 small neighborhood parks and three larger community parks—Greenvale, Red Oaks Mills and Stanley Still—where you’ll find baseball and soccer fields, playgrounds, pavilions and basketball and tennis courts. Peach Hill Park is the town’s largest park/preserve, with 160 acres featuring a trail to the highest point in Poughkeepsie, an old apple orchard, lots of wildlife and events like moon-rise and birding hikes and an Apple Cider Ramble. Dutchess Racquet Tennis Club is right across the street. If those parks aren’t big enough, the nearly 600-acre James Baird State Park is just east of town.

Upper Landing Park is right on the water in Ulster Landing, once a major shipping dock for Hudson River traffic stopping at Poughkeepsie; these days it’s the site of, amongst other things, a glass elevator leading to the Walkway Over the Hudson. You’ll also come across the Poughkeepsie Skateboard Park and the Poughkeepsie Waterfront Market there, which was opened by the nearby Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum in 2017; it’s the site of an exciting seasonal farmers’ market. And don’t miss the Hoffman House, one of the great old Poughkeepsie early houses, at 83 North Water Street. Poughkeepsie station, a Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak stop, is just steps away.

Just west of Ulster Landing is the Mount Carmel neighborhood, attractive with Italian bakeries and hilly streets near the waterfront; now that the Walkway Over the Hudson has turned the old railroad bridge that passes over the neighborhood into a recreational centerpiece of Poughkeepsie, the Mount Carmel area of Poughkeepsie is more popular than ever.

For indoor entertainment, Poughkeepsie’s got some venerable venues, such as the Mid-Hudson Civic Center with its McCann Ice Arena and the legendary Chance theater, where David Bowie, The Band and Bob Dylan all played "back in the day". Originally a vaudeville house and silent film cinema, The Chance's history is fascinating; read about it here. If you are a reader, the Mid-Hudson Library System’s anchor, Adriance Library, is a few blocks south. Go in for the amazing biography section, if nothing else, and then browse through the town when you’re done to see what other gems are hidden in the multitude of crisscrossing streets… such as one of the last great cobblers, Mark Nelson on South Hamilton Street.
