There's so much to do in Wappinger, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendation on the best things to do in Wappinger.
The full history of Wappinger is here, and it is compelling! The area at the confluence of Wappingers Creek and the Hudson River was particularly attractive for European settlement due to the water-power of the creek and the link to New York by the river. Major changes came in the 20th century, with the expansion of the Hudson Valley Regional Airport and when IBM arrived bringing suburban development. With Route 9 running right through town and Poughkeepsie its immediate neighbor to the north (both conveniences for local homeowners), it’s impressive that Wappinger NY has retained so much character. But it has, partly due to the town government’s emphasis on history, tradition and culture.
If you have a taste for the old estates lining the eastern banks of the Hudson River, Wappinger can boast of one of the most cohesive enclaves: The Wheeler Hill Historic District is a remarkable collection of residences that recall virtually every style in American architecture from the mid-18th to the early 20th century, an intact group of estates with support buildings, model farms, gardens and landscaped grounds, plus two earlier 18th-century properties recalling Dutch vernacular architecture.
Of the District’s estates, Carnwath Farms epitomizes the Romantic period, built in the Italian Villa style with a grand central staircase, elaborate plaster work, parquet floors and richly paneled rooms; much of this interior work dates to the 1870s, and many of the buildings on this property date to the same period, including the carriage house (1873) and cow barn (1876). For you enthusiasts, Carnwath Farms is home to the Sports Museum of Dutchess County; they’ve got exhibits on all the sports you would expect and some you would not, plus a permanent exhibit called “Legends of Dutchess.”
Other romping sites in Wappinger include 13 town parks and, at the Wappinger hamlet of Chelsea, a 140-year-old yacht club and the Captain Moses W. Collyer House, also known as Driftwood. Collyer co-wrote The Sloops of the Hudson, drawing on his years on the river from 1899-1942; it’s considered the definitive history of that era and its boats.
There are loads of places to frolic or do sports in Wappinger: Soccer fields surround a pond at Rockingham Park. At Quiet Acres Park there's basketball, a playground and baseball, but the main baseball venue in Wappinger, with 10 ballfields, is the 100-acre Robinson Lane Baseball Complex, where they also have batting cages, trails and protected land at Trout Creek, where canoes and kayaks can be launched!
Reese Park encompasses the Hunter Creek and its waterfalls. Seven-hundred-and-fifty-four acres of land, formerly the Verplanck family homestead, was donated in 1942 to the state with the provision that it remain forever devoted to agriculture; it’s now a Wappinger highlight, a 1,000-acre facility known as the Stony Kill Foundation, an educational working farm open to the public.
If fishing is an interest, a boat launch for small boats—due to the lake’s shallowness—can be accessed at Wappinger Lake, a man-made reservoir in Wappingers Falls, probably the most popular of Wappinger’s neighborhoods due to its charming old buildings, the falls, the park, cafes, restaurants and shops juxtaposed within its small business district.
If you’ve dreamed of owning Wappinger NY real estate right on the Hudson, an 1863 Victorian farmhouse could be the Wappinger home for you! Or a historic 1870 colonial set amidst centuries-old trees. Wappinger is not without equestrian properties and parcels of land for sale to build your dream home on.
