Putnam Valley real estate is everything from antique farmhouses to rare examples of modern architecture hidden in the woods. It's some of the most varied real estate in the Hudson Valley. It does, however, have a connecting thread, a beautiful setting.
Putnam Valley is a rural collection of hamlets where winding roads make their way over rocky hillsides and through woods, hugging a surprising number of streams, lakes and ponds. Residents often refer to it as the "Town of Lakes." Once upon a time, glaciers rolled over the town leaving behind an unusual and dramatic landscape with lots of pockets for lakes to accumulate! It’s a distinctive area that’s markedly different topographically from the communities that surround it.

There's so much to do in Putnam Valley, NY - it can be hard to decide! Contact one of our Local Experts at Village Green Realty. We'd love to give you our recommendation on the best things to do in Putnam Valley.
At one time, the shores of Putnam Valley’s three major lakes—Peekskill, Roaring Brook and Oscawana—saw only summer people sunning themselves. Putnam Valley was “Upstate” and those summer people went back to their full-time homes after Memorial Day. These days many people live by the lakes year-round, choosing to enjoy them in all seasons. Lake living offers fishing, swimming and boating in the warm weather and ice skating and ice fishing in winter, plus wonderful workday scenery for those fortunate enough to have a lake-view window in their home office. Beautiful Lake Oscawana is the largest of the three lakes, and the only one where motorized boats are allowed.
Putnam Valley has a wonderful community center at the town park, where the annual Town Day happens. Residents might play baseball or tennis, walk on the nature trails, skate on the roller-hockey rink or party in the pavilion; the town senior center is there, too. For more extensive hiking there are miles of trails in beautiful Fahnestock State Park (a draw for nature lovers across the region) and the Hudson Highlands Land Trust’s Granite Mountain Preserve.
Indoor activities abound as well, if you feel like seeing a show or growing your artistic skills in Putnam Valley, the high school’s performing arts center and the Tompkins Corners Cultural Center are two places to go for music, gallery shows, art classes and plays. The Putnam Valley Library offers a host of programming for residents. Putnam Valley is right on the border of Westchester County. Residents tend to go south into Westchester for recreation and education just as frequently as they go deeper into Putnam County. Neighboring Peekskill is known as a hotbed of art with art centers including Hudson Valley MOCA, Peekskill Arts Alliance, Bold Machines and Flat Iron Gallery, and the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater; in nearby Yorktown Heights, Yorktown Stage is another option.
Getting involved in organizations that help others in Putnam Valley is easy: for one thing, you can volunteer with the non-profit Putnam Valley Grange, originally a farmers’ group, it’s now open to anyone wishing to make a difference, with the emphasis on “working cooperatively with our environment for the betterment of all.” You might want to become part of the Putnam Valley Residents Coalition, whose mission is to protect the rural character of Putnam Valley.
Putnam Valley commuters to NYC either board trains at the Cortlandt or Peekskill stations or drive via the Taconic State Parkway, the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Henry Hudson Parkway.
Many Putnam Valley homes for sale were summer cottages that sprang up around the lakes. Over the years many have been expanded and transformed to year-round homes, including unique farmhouses, ranches and colonials. Some of these homes have lake and beach rights. In the parts of town where woods predominate, there are some homes built in the 1990s and 2000s as well as historic homes.
Recent listings included two Putnam Valley homes for sale sold together in a park-like setting of over eight acres with ponds, footbridges, paths, an in-ground pool, and several outbuildings, and a lake cottage right across the street from one of the lake’s beaches.
