One of Ulster County’s largest towns, Wawarsing sits in its southwest corner, bordering the wilds of Sullivan County. Wawarsing has a diverse topography, from steep, mountainous terrain to the relatively flat Rondout Valley. Most of the town is in the Appalachian foothills, whilst the northernmost part is in the Catskills. Wawarsing encompasses three state forests—Shawangunk Ridge, Vernooy Kill and Witches Hole—the greater part of Minnewaska State Park and Sam's Point Preserve, plus parts of the Catskill Forest Preserve and Sundown Wild Forest.
Despite that long list of wildernesses, when you’re on the main roads there, Wawarsing looks rather overdeveloped. But don’t be hoodwinked. Wawarsing is close to the ideal “smart growth” advocated in town planning--intense uses concentrated in hamlets and centers, uses of lower intensity in outlying areas. The fact is most of Wawarsing is undeveloped forests, whilst the remainder comprises limited clearing for residential development and agriculture.
For decades Wawarsing was a summer resort for New Yorkers seeking cool breezes, swimming holes and the society of country hotels. Those days are not completely over, though only a remnant lingers of what once was; there are still camps and inns strewn through the woods and peripheral Wawarsing districts.

The village of Ellenville and the hamlet of Napanoch are the two largest of Wawarsing’s neighborhoods; that’s where you’ll find most amenities. Mentioning only the Shawangunks, its five lakes, six waterfalls and over 100 miles of roads and trails provide Wawarsing with recreational resources and scenic views, essential ingredients in the quality of life enjoyed there. The beauty of the region is quite moving, the Shawangunk Ridge a continual source of inspiration.
Along with great natural wonders, Wawarsing is blessed with a caring community, lively arts scene and interactive farm culture. One example of Wawarsing holding out a collective helping hand is an annual Wings & Wheels for Warriors event to benefit disabled American vets. There are libraries in Ellenville and in Cragsmoor, and at both of them you’ll find multiple community resources and activities.
For 35+ years, Shadowland Stages has been presenting theater and classes in Ellenville for those with the acting bug. The Wawarsing Historical Society and Knife Museum is a look into the community’s past from a sharp angle (sorry!). The Ellenville-Wawarsing Chamber of Commerce is a helpful website for tuning into the region, and if you’ve never been to Cragsmoor, that’s another world in itself; the views from there are spectacular, perched as it is on top of Shawagunk Ridge.
You won’t want to pass up Barthel Farm Market & Creamery right on Route 209 in Napanoch, with its flower flats out front calling you in bright colors and a little window through which your banana split will come! Sign up for a share of organic veggies with Rusty Plough Farm; they’ve been feeding Wawarsing on clean, healthy produce for 25 years. If you don’t feel like cooking, Wawarsing is packed with good places to eat and drink; whether you want breakfast, lunch or dinner, you’ll find it in Wawarsing. In Napanoch don’t miss James General Store, not only for the deli but for James himself, a raconteur and former Napanoch supervisor.
Wawarsing offers the best of both worlds when it comes to real estate, with everything at your fingertips on routes 52, 209 and 55.
