The Saugerties hamlet of Malden-on-Hudson—locally known simply as Malden—is a bit of land north of the Village of Saugerties on the banks of the Hudson River populated by around 500 people… key words “on the banks of the Hudson”: Malden has everything to do with the Hudson River.
Head down to George J. Terpening, Sr., Memorial Park any day when the ice is off the river, and you’ll find someone putting their craft in the water at the public boat launch, maybe a member of the Malden Yacht Club, kayakers or a motorboater or someone setting off on a water-scooter. At one time the riverfront bustled all year-round, as ice harvesting was a huge industry before the age of refrigeration. These days, a few small businesses make their homes in Malden-on-Hudson, including Organic Nectars; they make vegan, organic, gluten-free, plant-based sweets and treats.

Nowadays a quiet, primarily residential neighborhood, Malden was at one time not only the site of the ice business but an active riverfront factory community. It was Asa Bigelow who developed the area when he started his Bigelow Bluestone Company and his Malden wharf and warehouses, known as the Bigelow Dock. In 1815 Asa built himself the Bigelow Homestead, still used by the Bigelow family as a rural retreat.
Malden river land includes the southern part of Bristol Beach, once a brickyard but now an undeveloped 165-acre park. For such a small hamlet, Malden has a good percentage of forested land, a bit of which has been carved out to make Poultney Bigelow Memorial Park, a sweet playground flanked by a couple of 100+-year-old homes, where you’ll find not only a swing set, basketball court and seesaw but also a cannon and monument to the USS Maine.
