Handy to the north-south Route 209 corridor, with the amenities of Ellenville not 10 miles away, the Town of Mamakating hamlet of Phillipsport has for its eastern neighbor the great Shawangunk Ridge. Visually it’s simply stunning, and it’s one of the natural wonders that’s brought outdoor enthusiasts flocking to the region for generations.
Many of the old-timers reached Phillipsport working for the Delaware & Hudson Canal, originally built to bring coal from Pennsylvania to the Hudson Valley. Nowadays, several points between Wurtsboro and Phillipsport on Route 209 provide access to the Delaware & Hudson Canal Linear Park and towpath trail. A combination of wetland and evergreen forest, this is a grand place for walkers, nature enthusiasts, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, fisher-people and kayakers. Chances are you’ll find yourself one of very few at this heavenly spot, where the canal was abandoned over 100 years ago, and nature has come into her own again.
Another public trail near Wurtsboro is the Mamakating O&W Rail Trail, where the Ontario & Western Railroad lives on as part of a three-mile stretch linking downtown Wurtsboro with the Wurtsboro Ridge, Roosa Gap and Shawangunk Ridge state forests.

You can thank the Sullivan Renaissance group, which has taken on so many projects in the county lately, for engaging the 50+-year-old Phillipsport Community Center Association in a Hamlet Beautification project to renovate and restore gardens throughout the hamlet. Beyond that the PCCA presents things like music nights and nature talks and works “toward the enhancement of the quality of life for all members of the community through social, educational, recreational and health programs.”
What else goes on around here? Just south of Phillipsport in the Mamakating hamlet of Wurtsboro, the Wurtsboro Art Alliance is the place to be for classes, workshops and exhibitions in the John Neilson Gallery. Only a couple of blocks away is the wonderful Mamakating Library, a cornucopia of resources and activities for young and old, like a “Books and Tea” discussion group and storytime outdoors at Wurtsboro’s Veterans Memorial Park next door.
The library is also the weekly pick-up site for Rondout Valley Organics, which is fantastic; local farms and producers throughout the Rondout Valley contribute to make this a delicious and healthy year-round alternative to the mainstream supermarket.
You know that feeling of having all this beautiful food in the fridge (like what you picked up at the library!) and wanting to eat out anyway? Don’t miss the vegetarian Red Dot Café in Wurtsboro, serving everything from paratha wraps for breakfast to “fish-less and chips” or Chinese kung pao later in the day. Then get out and stroll along Sullivan Street to browse the American crafts, handmade jewelry, local farm goods and more at the Canal Towne Emporium, a surprising selection in a quaint 1840s general store. Not far from there you'll meet the locals at the Wurtsboro Diner.
