Homes For Sale In Prattsville NY

To talk about the Greene County Town of Prattsville you have to remember Congressman Zadock Pratt. He created the world’s largest tannery in 1825 on the banks of the Schoharie Creek and laid out the village of Prattsville to accommodate his workforce. He had more than 100 houses and 1.5 miles of sidewalks built, planted over 1,000 trees in town and gave eight acres for a cemetery.

For more than 20 years Pratt employed a stoneworker to carve his life story on the cliffs above the town—the famous Pratt Rock (on the National Register of Historic Places), where his likeness can still be seen when you hike up the trail at the 20-acre Pratt Rock Park. The Zadock Pratt Museum just celebrated 60 years of educating the public about Pratt and the greater Schohariekill-Prattsville area.

So, a couple of hundred years later, the name of Pratt is not forgotten. There’s the Prattsville Softball League; the Prattsville Diner, where you can enjoy your pancakes and eggs overlooking the creek; and Friday night pizza with the bikers at Prattsville Tavern.

The 1840 Prattsville Art Center has become something of a community center, with everyone stopping by for espresso and baked goods by Diane Apostolacus of Catskill Bake Works or to sign up for yoga classes or get help with healthcare navigation… not forgetting the music and arts residencies, art classes in everything from video editing to painting, a gallery, performance space, computer lab and library. Don’t miss the Art Center's country/urban Headed for the Hills festival this summer; there were 30 bands at the last one, plus work by such artists as Clover Archer and David Szlasa, all celebrating diversity in Prattsville.

Even though Diane’s pastry is gorgeous, we don’t live on pastry alone, and you don’t have to leave town for groceries. You’ve got Jim’s Great American Supermarket, reminding their customers, in a recent Facebook post, “When you see something in an independent store that costs a little more, remember that Amazon and Ebay don’t buy ads in the local football program, Walmart won’t donate prizes to your silent auction, and Target doesn’t have kids playing Little League in your community. Small business owners DO…”. What they also do is carry beer from West Kill Brewing and corn in season from Catskill’s Story Farms.

Prattsville Homes For Sale

For strictly local food, Robert and Sandra Kiley grow summer and fall  vegetables at their RSK Farm and sell them at their farm stand as  well as to local restaurants (and at the Kingston Farmers Market, among others). Prattsville’s popular ice cream stand, G Jimmies, serves hard ice cream, soft serve, shakes, malts, floats, their special sundaes and iced coffee.

Right near Jim’s market is What The Soap, where a family transplanted from Long Island sells their own prettily packaged bar and liquid soap, body scrubs and moisturizers, plus a selection of books reflecting the owners’ passions for nature, local history, gardening and foraging; and artisans’ goods like  Woke & Bespoke jewelry, Muffin & James dog treats and Harpersfield Nanny’s handmade shawls

Thinking of getting out of the city but don’t have a car? Trailways comes through Prattsville, stopping right outside the Young family’s Ace Hardware store; get tickets in the store or on the bus.

The great outdoors hardly needs emphasizing when writing about Prattsville, as the town is just a drop of civilization in the midst of the most beautiful and expansive forests and Catskills mountains. Swimming is a matter of jumping into the Schoharie Creek’s many swimming holes (as long as there's no sign saying not to). The 1,300-acre Huntersfield State Forest is to the east; Bearpen Mountain and Relay state forests are to the west. A few miles north are Mine Kill State Park (where there’s an Olympic-sized pool, besides the 80-foot waterfall the park is named after) and Blenheim Hill State Forest. To the south are Halcott Mountain and the Hunter-West Kill Wilderness. Of course if you ski, you’re in luck in Prattsville, with Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain not too far east of town.
