The hamlet of Elizaville NY is only 2.5 miles east of U.S. 9, the longest north-south highway in New York state, but don’t let that fool you. Sitting on the border between the towns of Clermont and Gallatin, Elizaville is very rural, as rural as its quaint name. Surrounded by forest, the hamlet has a few small businesses and professionals hidden here and there, but as for what you see in the hamlet, there’s a diner and a post office. It’s pretty country, unspoiled and quiet, full of small brooks and streams, with two lakes just north of the center of the hamlet.
The Town of Clermont NY is hardly a metropolis, either. It occupies less than 20 square miles of farmland and forest, and aside from its natural beauty, it’s mainly known for its history, having been one of the oldest of the first great estates of the mid-Hudson Valley, part of the original Livingston Manor 160,000-acre grant given to Robert Livingston the Elder during the reign of King George I. The manor built by Livingston’s son was burned during the Revolutionary War, but the house rebuilt between 1779 and 1782 remained in the Livingston family until 1962 and is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The Clermont State Historic Site is one of the few beautiful old homes on the Hudson in southern Columbia County where the public is welcome; go there to enjoy the charming gardens, river views, huge old trees and exquisite lilac walk.

Clermont NY has two town parks: Clermont Park has swings, a half-basketball court, Little League baseball field, vernal pool and hiking trails. Hettling Park at Clermont has soccer fields, walking trails and a hilltop Veterans monument with fabulous views of the Catskills across the river. On the other side of Elizaville, in Gallatin, is the 168-acre Lake Taghkanic State Park, and that’s a huge resource for locals; the park has two beaches, boat launch sites; rowboat, paddleboat and kayak rentals, playgrounds, sports fields, a pavilion, a recreation hall and showers. Some of the activities allowed are hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, ice skating and ice fishing.
There’s a public beach at Elizaville’s Twin Lakes, where The Friends of North Twin Lake Park, a non-profit, all-volunteer group, are dedicated to protecting and preserving the property’s natural beauty and habitats, while supporting community recreational use. Most of the lakes use is private, however.
The Taconic State Parkway, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Bard College and Hudson are not far from Elizaville NY, and therefore it’s not impossible to have your cake and eat it, too, i.e., enjoy the peace and quiet of Elizaville whilst having all the necessities and cultural venues just down the road.
Some of the nicest Elizaville homes for sale are at Twin Lakes, which comprises two bodies of water separated by a rural road. Lake rights extend to most properties even if they’re not right on the water. For example, a short walk from North Twin Lakes is a two-story, 1939 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 1,704-square-foot bungalow featuring exposed beams, deck, patio, cultivated flower gardens and shade trees, a pole barn with electric and a generous utility/storage area. At South Twin Lakes is a 1973 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 1,636-square-foot ranch with a fireplace in the living room and a wood stove in the family room, open kitchen, formal dining area, patio and separate cottage, all just a quick stroll from the private beach.
Other Elizaville NY real estate includes a secluded 10+-acre lot surrounded by maple, pine and apple trees on which sits a 1951 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 2,156-square-foot Elizaville home for sale with two wood-burning fireplaces, French doors and great seasonal views. One of the older Elizaville NY homes for sale is a center-hall 1853 4-bedroom, 2-bath, 1,950-square-foot home with exposed beams on 2.5 acres with two parlors.
Some Elizaville real estate has agricultural exemptions, which means reduced taxes. For instance, on a private 18.7 acre lot with mountain views and the Roeliff Jansen Kill running through it is a 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath, 2,780-square-foot Elizaville NY home for sale with new roof and siding.
For investment or building purposes, there are lots of lots! A sprawling 33.8-acre parcel with seasonal Catskills Mountain views would make a great farm, estate or horse property; it’s mostly cleared and features five meadows sectioned by hedge rows and two deeded right-of-ways. For those really spectacular Catskills views, an 1,100-acre largely wooded parcel includes the highest elevation in the township, as well as a lake, century-old stone walls and water. Another property with agricultural exemptions is a 30.9-acre chunk of beautifully maintained rolling farmland in Elizaville NY real estate with magnificent picture-postcard views across the Hudson to the Catskills.
