A hamlet south of the Village of Saugerties NY on the Hudson River, Glasco is a historic community named for the Glass Co., which was miles to the west—in Woodstock, in fact—but the glass was brought to the banks of the Hudson on horseback over what became known as Glasco Turnpike, and the place where it ended its journey has been known since then as Glasco NY.

These days, if you follow Glasco Turnpike from the Saugerties end, you must zigzag south for about a mile on Route 9W and pick up Glasco again at a right turn. (From there, Glasco Turnpike takes you all the way to Route 212 in Shady.) I wonder if that section of 9W used to be called Glasco Turnpike? Hmm… It’s all County Route 32, fyi, to further confuse the issue.

A good part of Glasco, nearly all the land south of the homes along Main Street and east of the homes and businesses on Route 9W, is undeveloped forest. Being right on the river is huge, of course, riverfront property being so desirable. It’s very special, living in a place where there are so many trees and this glorious river just down the street.

Glasco NY is a charming community where there are still a lot of Italians, descendants of workers who came up by ferry from NYC in the late 1800s to work at the mills, brickyards, ice harvesting factories and bluestone quarries and started their own dairy farms and vineyards on the land rising from the beautiful Hudson River. Mainly residential with a few small businesses, Glasco NY has a character all its own.

Being right off Route 9W means Glasco is super-handy to the village of Saugerties, to Kingston, the Rhinecliff bridge and the NYS Thruway. But it’s a true neighborhood with all the community friendliness that implies, and there are a couple of special places where people gather. Glasco Mini Park features a large boat launch with concrete ramp and dock, able to accommodate two boats simultaneously. A second, smaller launch accommodates kayaks and “carry-ons.” Besides that, there’s a small pavilion with picnic tables and grills, a playground, fishing pier, park benches and, naturally, spectacular Hudson River views. Another Glasco park is southeast of the Glasco Firehouse, so get out the bats, balls and mitts and get some action on those baseball diamonds.

Glasco also is home to a lovely nature park, Scenic Hudson's Falling Waters Preserve, on 150 acres in the northern part of the hamlet along the river. You walk on easy paths through a lovely meadow and woods ringing with birdsong and come upon picturesque waterfalls and, suddenly, the river; you can walk right into the water, if you so desire. It’s very pretty and peaceful at Falling Waters. Come to think of it, it’s pretty and peaceful in all of Glasco.
