With more than 20 properties on the National Register of Historic Places in the 48 square miles comprising the Town of Claverack you can see and feel the past here. The town’s incorporation in 1788 is notable, but not its earliest moment of note: The first known mastodon tooth found in the New World was discovered here in 1705 by a tenant farmer’s horse-drawn plow. This is a rural area, still known for pastures and horses. The Town of Claverack is made up of the quaintly-named hamlets of Brick Tavern, Churchtown, Claverack, Hollowville and Upper Hollowville, Martindale and Mellenville, the village of Philmont and Red Mill. Of these, only Philmont  has its own municipal structure.

The Town of Claverack is the second-most-populated township in Columbia County NY, which speaks more to the low population density in Columbia County than the size of Claverack. Much of the town remains relatively undeveloped, its principal economic activity agriculture, its visual aspect bucolic, a patchwork of greens on the satellite map. Accordingly, much of Claverack’s culture still revolves around its agrarian surroundings.

Living in the middle of farm country provides myriad opportunities to support the local growers and makers who make up the community: Residents buy and eat local year-round. The organic vegetables, plants and flowers and maple products produced at the 200-acre Farm at Millers Crossing are available at the Hudson Farmers Market and through member CSAs… meaning if you live nearby you can pick up their products at the farm through the Community-Supported Agriculture system.  

MX Morningstar Farm has a year-round farm market with the pick of goods from “trusted local growers”; they too have a CSA, and sell their goods at the Great Barrington Farmers Market May through October. Pick your own apples and pears all summer long at Philip Orchards. Trumbull Farms specializes in lavender: English Folgate, English Royal Velvet and a French/English hybrid–Claverack houses smell sweet!

Cooper's Daughter at Olde York Farm Distillery and Cooperage is part of the 1805 Jacob Rusten Van Rensselaer House and mill complex; the restored carriage house is where they make everything from Smoked Maple Bourbon, Rose and Lilac liqueurs and Ramp Vodka to the barrels in which bourbon, whiskey and brandy are aged. On the weekends you’ll find your friends hanging out in their cocktail garden enjoying some grub from a food truck.

If you are a rider or own horses, you’ll have plenty of company in Claverack: Equestrian centers for riding, boarding and training in or close to Claverack are Friendship Equestrian Center, Whispering Meadows, Thor Icelandics, Apple Hill Dressage and High & Mighty Therapeutic Riding & Driving Center.

Town of Claverack community services include food pantries in Philmont and Mellenville; two libraries, the Claverack Free Library and Philmont Public Library; post offices in Claverack, Mellenville, Hollowville and Philmont; the Claverack Seniors Club and the Claverack Youth Program in summer and winter. Of course, living in Claverack gives you access to Hudson's many delightful, not to mention practical, opportunities.

Claverack is a few minutes to the southeast of popular Hudson, and State Route 23 runs right through Claverack, which means easy access to main roads like State Route 9, the Taconic Parkway and, just over the Catskill-to-Hudson Rip Van Winkle Bridge, the NY State Thruway. Clearly, living in the peace and quiet of Claverack does not mean you’ll have to trek far for the necessities of life.
