There are literally hundreds of places to read about what happened in Bethel in 1969, aside from the building of the Sullivan County Airport, that is! But even without the Woodstock Festival, the Town of Bethel was always going to be popular for its profusion of lakes and streams and the beauty of its undulating landscape.
Bethel—comprising Bethel, Kauneonga Lake, Smallwood, White Lake, parts of Mongaup Valley and Swan Lake—is 200+ years old. Suffice it to say, after all the trees were used in the tanning and logging industries, it became a primarily agricultural town. Farming is still one of the two thriving industries; the other is tourism, with an emphasis on peace signs.
For the people who live here, Bethel is a close-knit community, with many organizations, such as the Bethel Farming Community, the Bethelites, the Seniors, Bethel First, Sustainable Bethel, Bethel Healthy Community, the Bethel Local Development Corporation, and the Smallwood Civic Association, taking care of each other.

The natural beauty of the area is such that you smile just doing your errands around town. You’ve probably heard of White Lake if you know even a little bit about the Woodstock Festival; Sullivan County’s deepest lake, it’s also well-known for its bass and trout fishing and motor boating, with a boat launch in the hamlet of Kauneonga Lake, which is the northern part of White Lake, often referred to by its Native American name, which means "lake with two wings.” Look at it on the satellite map; it does look like a flying bird!
The hamlet of Kauneonga Lake is known for its restaurants right on the lake, The Local Table & Tap, Sorella, Java Love Coffee Roasting Co. and Brew, amongst them.
Locals love Bethel Market Café for homemade breakfast, lunch and lovely baked goods. Hector’s Inn, known as “a cool little dive bar" has live music, a sweet little porch, and a big outdoor seating pavilion, and they host classic car shows, which can be quite fun, particularly if you appreciate the cars as works of art. Bethel has an art gallery, Stray Cat, featuring works by local artists across many media, including jewelry, sculpture, paintings and photography, quite often of musicians who played at Woodstock.
Hanging out in Bethel gets busier in the summer, of course, but so does anyplace that has such an abundance of gorgeous swimming areas and seasonal activities. Besides White Lake, there’s Chestnut Ridge Pond, Mallory Pond, Swan Lake, Lake Superior State Park, the Toronto Reservoir, and Black Lake Preserve.
There’s still music in Bethel: bring your blankets to Bethel Lakeside Music for live concerts weekly at Kauneonga Lake Gazebo Park. Or pick your way through Bethel Crafts & Flea Market all summer long. Summer’s bounty is available at Kauneonga Lake Farmers Market and L&M Greenhouse/Farm Stand, and for racing enthusiasts there’s Bethel Motor Speedway.
Indoors and out, the community of Bethel still cultivates peace and love.
With all the lovely lakes in Bethel, a lot of Bethel homes for sale and Bethel land properties are on the water. Part of the White Lake Homes community, a three-bedroom, three-bath contemporary Bethel home for sale is in between two lakes, so you’ll spend a lot of time on your deck looking at the Bethel lake, boating on White Lake or Adler Lake, playing tennis or taking advantage of the White Lake Homes pool and clubhouse. For something larger, have a look at a 6,000-square-foot custom-built, private Bethel lakeside estate with five bedrooms, each of which has a full bath and walk-in closets; out back there’s a tennis court and heated, inground pool facing the lake, where you have a dock. There’s a 65-acre Bethel lot bordered by a river and a 20-acre pond if you prefer to design your own Bethel home.
