Woodstock New York Artists' Home | Perfectly Woodstock

When we think of Woodstock, most of us think of the arts. So, take just a second to imagine what a home that exemplifies the spirit of Woodstock would be like....

It would have a connection to nature for inspiration. Wouldn't it? It would have charming spaces, outdoors and in. It would have unique details that go beyond traditional mill-work and tile, to surprises carried out with inventive, perfect craftsmanship. It would as if it grew in its spot over time, with each growth spurt marked by a different craftsperson with a different vision. Although those visions are different, they would exist in perfect harmony with one another. It would have developed just as the town has developed, incorporating new influences and welcoming each new group of people to a place where they will find calming, nurturing peace, that will lead them to new heights of creativity. In short, it would be really, really cool.

That unique home is, in fact, not a figment of our collective imaginations. It exists. It's just minutes to the center of Woodstock, surrounded by over 76 acres of woodland.

Truly a treasure, this unique and private Arts and Crafts home with extraordinary contemporary additions is set within an established protected garden oasis. The gardens have been lovingly cared for over many years, with perennials fed by an underground water system. Lovely patios and a private in-ground pool create the feeling of a private woodland spa. At the far end of the pool area is a country gate that opens to hours of woodland exploration. Follow a stream and discover something new every day.

The stone & glass home creatively weaves together two distinguished artists who deeply loved the mountainside from which this Woodstock home rises. Bruno Zimm built the home in the early 20th century. It is his poetic mastery of stone and wood carving, full of spirit and craft, that creates many of the unique decorative surprises inside and out. Zimm's carvings and inscriptions in wood and stone appear in the lintels, mantels, trim work, and masonry.

The Glaser's, the homes second owners, have been a magnet drawing iconic figures to Woodstock during the last half century. They have been credited with shaping the course of the community for a solid 50 years. They have artfully added a contemporary aesthetic. Their additions of glass and light perfectly balance Zimm's stonework and solid arts and crafts details. Milton Glaser is recognized as one of the last centuries' top graphic designers and created a natural light-filled studio that overlooks the pool area and gardens, inspired by Italian travels. These two artists combined have created a space like no other.

The ground floor has a cozy living and dining room, with fireplaces crafted by Zimm at either end! The sunny, sleekly renovated kitchen is large and has views of the gardens and pool. A perfectly proportioned office with another fireplace is the "bridge" from which the home flows into a "cathedral"; a 50 foot long great room perfect for entertaining and gatherings or for contemplation. Sliding glass doors along both lengths open to the forest and a bluestone patio. The house has three bedrooms in the original section of the house, all infused with character from the pitched roof and dormer windows. Two full baths are on the second floor.

Steeped in history, with so many possibilities this house embodies the spirit of Woodstock, past, present, and future. Even if you're not in the market for a home like this, the photos are a wonderful reminder of what the nurturing spirit of our area can help create.
