Onteora Park Open House June 25th 1-5pm

948 Country Route 25, Tannersville NY 12485

“The fine arts should be regarded as the crowning glory of all the arts, equally necessary and useful to man, who in his desire to reach the perfect existence, with the joy of life as the spring of his impulses, draws from nature about him every element possible which will contribute to his pleasure and satisfaction.”

-George Reid, Painter and Architect of 948 Country Route 25, Tannersville.

Onteora Park is living, breathing Americana, and a bit of a titillating mystery. Even if you’ve lived in the Catskills for a good long time, you may never have heard of it. If you have heard the whispers of the private enclave of grand arts and crafts “cottages”, you may not have had the privilege of visiting. Founded over 100 years ago by design great Candace Wheeler the Onteora Club in Onteora Park has been a secluded escape for a community of people drawn together by their love of the arts, learning, and the amazing natural surroundings of the Park. Set just so in the Catskills, it seems a fresh, light breeze is always blowing through the Park, making days spent enjoying the 9-hole golf course, the clay tennis courts, the lake, the pool and the miles of hiking trails, perfection. As a resident you can sit on your porch, or that of you neighbors, sip lemonade and discuss the play you saw in the Club’s private theatre the night before, or the lecture you heard at the Club’s field house, just as Mark Twain and friends did when the club formed over a century ago.

Those who live in Onteora Park have use of the Club. Along with the outdoor amenities there is a library, theatre, bar and the field house with a full-time chef and rooms to accommodate the guests of residents. It’s not often that homes in Onteora Park become available for sale, the residents tend to consider these cottages part of their heritage. But, one has recently come on the market - and it is so very beautiful.

Designed by the famed Onteora Park architect and painter George Reid who designed the beautiful chapel inside the park, and built in 1904, this Arts & Crafts home has been lovingly restored to shining glory. Modern conveniences have been added while carefully maintaining the home’s original grace. Nearly 5000 sq ft with 6 bedrooms, 5 baths (2 master en suites) it is a “cottage” by an earlier eras definition. It has 4 working fireplaces, a magnificent great room with a minstrel's gallery above that is wrapped in hand painted murals of views of the Catskills. It is the home’s hallmark. There’s a newly renovated cook’s kitchen, a large formal dining room, a play room/gym with a steam shower, and a cozy den/media room. Step outside onto the grand wrap-around covered porch and gaze at the 2 lush acres of perennial gardens surrounded by stonework. The home is set directly across the road from Mountain Top Arboretum where the views are forever protected, and within walking distance of the Onteora Club and Deer Mountain Inn, a popular getaway.

Just outside the village of Tannersville which has great arts programming and amazing burgers and down the road from Hunter for skiing and concerts, and a quick ride to Windham for even more skiing.

If your curiosity has been sparked you’re in luck. On June 25th between 1:00 and 5:00 the house will be open to visitors for a garden party. Come tour the house, enjoy a snack in the garden, and satisfy your curiosity. You might just find a place to built your future surrounded by natural beauty.
