Kinderhook NY Real Estate

Homes For Sale In Kinderhook NY

Kinderhook real estate is both historic and modern. Kinderhook is a rural blend of old villages and country roads with Dutch colonial farmhouses and mansions alongside modern architecture and culture. President Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, and Lindenwald, where he lived in retirement, remains an important historic landmark in the town. A more modern Kinderhook pro for residents is Broad Street Bagel - where you can get a knock-out-good bagel and a mean caramel macchiato!

Kinderhook, Kinderhook Lake, Knickerbocker Lake, Niverville, Valatie and Valatie Colony comprise the Town of Kinderhook NY, well known for its beautiful old buildings and blend of the old and new. It’s a day-trip destination for people from far and near and, most importantly, a charming place to live. It's close to both Albany and Hudson and yet removed from the hustle and bustle of 21st-century existence.

Kinderhook NY History and Lifestyle

Kinderhook Homes For Sale

Just a little Kinderhook history...

The 1916 Columbia County Historical Society owns four historic properties in the village of Kinderhook, and movies were filmed in Kinderhook as early as 1923, when escape artist Harry Houdini starred in Haldane of the Secret Service, made at Beaver Mill Falls in Valatie. The pristine old patroon house in The Age of Innocence (1996) was the Van Alen House.

Valatie, from the Dutch for the “little falls,” in the center of the village, was just one of the sites of the numerous mills that sprang up due to the confluence of area creeks, including the Kinderhook Creek, making Kinderhook NY one of the leading manufacturing centers in the nation in the early part of the 19th century.

On to the present!

Rothermel Park is a wonderful town resource with baseball fields, a tennis court, basketball court, playground and picnic pavilion. There’s a community garden at Mills Park, one of four Village of Kinderhook green infrastructure assets, including The Vly, the Village Green and Rothermel Park.

The Village of Kinderhook NY is the site of a weekly Fun Run on Wednesday evenings in the summer and the annual OK 5K. Running through the villages of Kinderhook and Valatie is part of the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail, a shared-use bicycling and pedestrian trail along the 36-mile Albany-Hudson Electric Trolley corridor from Hudson to Rensselaer.

Kinderhook is an arts town. Jack Shainman has a gallery in Kinderhook called The School in a 30,000-square-foot Federal-style building where the aim is to “exhibit, represent and champion artists from around the world, in particular artists from Africa, East Asia, and North America.” Music and theatrical performances are presented at the intimate Valatie Community Theatre, originally built as a movie house in 1926. Concerts In the Village hosts choral and instrumental classical music at Kinderhook Reformed Church.

Of all the lakes in New York State, Kinderhook Lake is one of the first to have been electrified! In the early 1900s, the Albany and Hudson Railway built an Electric Park on the East Shore of Kinderhook Lake with some of the first electric lights and amusement rides in the country. The Park closed during WWI, but the lake has remained an enjoyable and picturesque recreational location.

Residents of Kinderhook have options when it comes to food, drink and places to get together with friends and enjoy themselves. Get the best of the local farms and provisioners at Kinderhook Farmers Market May through October. Golden Harvest Farm road stand is open daily year-round; the farm is the site of Harvest Spirits Distillery, which makes most of its products from Golden Harvest Farm apples. DYAD Wine Bar is a twist on the traditional tapas bar and restaurant. A local stand-by for breakfast and lunch is the aforementioned Broad Street Bagel, where a 150-year-old Brooklyn bagel recipe and hand-whipped cream cheese keep ‘em coming back. Locals love the cozy, family-run beer and cheese shop at Saisonnier; and if you love Mexican food, try Magdalena’s
