If you’re heading to Connecticut from the Hudson Valley, you may pass through the Town of Dover NY on your way, because it’s right on the border, but not unless you stray off the proverbial “beaten path.” That's where you'll find the hidden gems of Dover real estate. While NY State Route 22 runs through town, it hasn't interrupted the town's rural flavor. Even with the train stations in two of Dover's hamlets the small-town feel remains, and the train stations make it very convenient to get to and from the city.

If anything can give an idea of the rural nature of a place, it’s the number of farms in the region, where you can pick up local goods, join the CSA, ride a hay-wagon or grab a pumpkin. Dover is still chock-full of farms, including two maple syrup farms: Soukup Farms and Crown Maple; White Pine Community Farm, where they grow organic herbs for “teas, tinctures and more”; Farmer Dave’s CSA for fruits and veggies; and the “100% women-owned” Falconwood Farm apiary.
Dover NY also nurtures horses and horse-lovers, so if that’s your thing, contact us about equestrian properties for sale. Among the Dover horse farms to visit are Castlegate Farm where they breed, sell, train and show; Takoda Farm, providing post-operative care for horses; and Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue.
Another indication of the rural character of a place is how long the local institutions have been going and the number of annual festivals community groups hold to celebrate their town and themselves. Dover NY does it up right, with an Easter Egg Hunt, American Legion Memorial Day Service, Dover Community Day, the Halloween Rag-a-Muffin Parade, the Holiday Tree Lighting and the J.H. Ketcham Fire Co. Carnival and Parade—for 100 years! The Dover Little League is over 70 years old and the library over 100 years old.
Going back further in time, the first town meeting took place in the home of John Preston, whose descendants live in the area to this day; his home, opened in 1750 as the Clear Water Tavern and in the Preston family until 1910, is now known as the Old Drovers Inn and is famous for having been the site of a tryst between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor during the filming of Cleopatra. A second historic Dover NY property is the 1810 Tabor-Wing House, built by the son of one of the area’s earliest settlers and for some time the town library; it’s now home to the very active Dover Historical Society and the site of a summer outdoor farmers market and various workshops and events, like the recent Open Hearth Cooking demo-dinner.
Dover has a number of parks and recreation opportunities in the little town: Boyce Park, West Mountain State Forest, Nellie Hill Preserve the Appalachian Trail, Roger Perry Memorial Preserve and the Dover Stone Church Preserve, where the Native American presence in the area is honored.
Opportunities and commutability abound when it comes to Dover NY real estate. Dover is about 30 miles east of Poughkeepsie and not 40 miles west of Torrington, Connecticut, and there are train stations in two of the three Dover hamlets, so access to everywhere is easy. Perhaps you telecommute and don’t have to leave the house but for groceries (or just when you feel like it), in that case, a Dover home for sale tucked into the woods with a long driveway could be perfect!
A recent Dover property listed on the MLS had 80 acres of land and a 10-acre private lake with a sandy beach, dock and gazebo! Maybe you prefer the antique, in which case you just missed a 1750 Dover farm for sale with 175 acres, a restored Dover NY barn, pool, guest cottage, pond, tennis court, riding ring and stables, all surrounded by mature landscaping.
However you picture your Dover NY home for sale, a Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty agent can make that picture come to life!
