Barbie, the good, the bad, and the ugly, medieval soldiers, bees, Berlin burlesquers, and great clouds of color make up our August 2023 roundup of Catskill and Hudson Valley events. If you're looking for something to do this weekend in the Catskills, look here.
Intro To Fencing
Where: Goshen, NY
Let's start with something completely out of the ordinary! Fencing isn't exactly a common hobby - but it's cool! This is fencing derived from the study of books and treatises of historical fencing masters from Europe. HOW could that NOT be interesting? Plus...swords! Kudos to the Goshen Public Library for having this niche event on their calendar.
Ingrid Nichter: What It Means To Be Human
Where: Saugerties, NY
Do a search for quotes on what it means to be human and you can spend hours contemplating the viewpoints of philosophers, celebs, athletes, and literary greats. Ingrid Nichter has searched for meaning in mixed media. Visit Emerge in Saugerties - while you're there, check out this incredible commercial building we have available for sale. Perhaps you'll want to become Emerge's neighbor....
Yoga At Opus 40
Where: Saugerties, NY
Outdoor yoga is a wonderful thing. Outdoor yoga in front of a world-renowned sculpture park where the only sound is the breathing of your fellow yogis is a recipe for transcendence. Every Wednesday and Saturday Kelli Gilmor leads a one hour vinyasa flow. This is one of those rare events that might turn into a habit.
2023 Exhibitions At Storm King
Where: New Windsor, NY
This season Storm King sculpture park is hosting three guest exhibitions: "The Volcano That Left", Outlooks, and The Sun and The Moon. Storm King is in New Windsor. After you've walked the grounds and explored the exhibits you might want to visit the closest stop on our Hudson Valley Ice Cream Trail - The American House in Chester.
Public History Tours at Mount Gulian
Where: Beacon, NY
Small museums are a great way to get in-depth information on the historical significance of a place - they're a deep-dive in a pleasant package! Mount Gulian in Beacon offers tours of a stone dutch colonial and its barn that take you from the time the Wappinger people used the land seasonally through the civil war and beyond. Spend a chunk of your day here and the rest of the day in Beacon.
Theater: Cabaret
Where: Hunter, NY
We have Maude Adam's house on the market. This summer, at her theatre, Cander and Ebb's classic musical is on the boards. Go see it!
Hudson Valley Craft Beverage Festival
Where: New Paltz, NY
Twin Star Orchards is a CBVGR favorite. It's fun and pretty and they have corn hole! This event featuring 20 makers of cider, wine, beer, spirits and mead is a collab with Brooklyn Cider House. There's so much to do around New Paltz you can make a day of it, then sample to your hearts content at Twin Star.
Drag Bingo With Murder Mystery Manhattan
Where: Montgomery, NY
Silliness awaits in Montgomery! "Kartrashian Drag Bingo - It’s an interactive night with special guests Kim Kartrashian, Caitlyn Gender, and dragon-lady momager, Kris Gender. Fake nails fly as these three hilariously call numbers and add their own dirty commentary as they do it."
The Taste of Tea (茶の味, 2004)
Where: Peekskill, NY
Art film fan? "This Japanese comedy-drama was written and directed by Katsuhito Ishii. The plot follows the lives of the Haruno family, who live in a rural town north of Tokyo. The film has been referred to as a surreal version of Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander (1982). It was a selection of the Cannes Film Festival and was listed in the 2012 Sight & Sound critics poll as one of the greatest films ever made."
Deep In The Valley 2023
Where: Red Hook, NY
"Last year’s inaugural Deep In The Valley Fest brought together a cross-section of musical genres with a common thread of experimentation and exploration. Curated by music blog Raven Sings the Blues, the roster exemplified the current crop of Cosmic American travelers. This year that tradition continues. Returning to From The Ground Brewery, nestled on Migliorelli Orchard in Red Hook, NY, the festival this year boasts a packed roster of RSTB faves." Gracie's will have their food truck there!!!!
Sunset Flix At Hasbrouck House
Where: Stone Ridge, NY
Hasbrouck House is a beautiful place for any event. We love it when they host musicians or a flea. This summer they're hosting free movies under a tent on their lovely grounds. Come for dinner at Butterfield, stay for the show.
Fuller Moon Arts Festival
Where: Warwick, NY
This one is really appealing to us. "Fuller Moon Arts Festival celebrates the convergence of performance, art and nature with a two-day festival at the magical lakefront setting of Mountain Lake Park, Warwick, NY. Suitable for all ages. For the second year, the festival invites guests to experience interactive art displays set around the park, listen to live music, watch dance performances, and join artists in hands-on making in the park’s art studios. It features a curated artisan maker market, an outdoor bar, and a tasty selection of farm-to-table food prepared by local chefs."
