Woodstock NY Art Galleries, A Map and Tour

The quaint town of Woodstock, NY, has long been celebrated as a mountain enclave of creatives and artists. Beyond the iconic music festival (which, of course, was not actually held in Woodstock), Woodstock is famous for its charming Village, centered around the green that we're named for (Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty), and its art scene. One of the nicest ways to enjoy Woodstock is by planning a day around visiting as many of the art galleries both in the village and outside as you can while taking breaks to visit the carefully curated retail shops in town and one or two of the restaurants (tacos anyone?) and/or stopping for desert (ice cream?). We've listed 13 galleries that are generally open and easy to visit knowing that there are so many more artist's studios in the homes of the artists and craftspeople of Woodstock that are hidden in the woods and on the hills of the town we also call home, and are open to those who make appointments directly with the artists.

1. Clouds

We start our tour of Woodstock, NY's art galleries at Clouds, directly across the street from the village green. Clouds is arguably the oldest gallery in Woodstock and features the small works of both local jewelers, ceramicists, potters, and glassmiths and those of artists from across the country. The founder of our company, Joan Lonergan's work in porcelain is featured there right now and she was able to give us a quick tour earlier this week.

2. Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty

Yes, we're a real estate agency. We're a real estate agency in the center of Woodstock and we've been living and working here for 30 years and are deeply embedded in the arts community. Years ago, there started to be a little less gallery space in Woodstock than there had been before. So, we opened up our office to artists so they'd have one more place to display their work. We get to enjoy an ever-changing rotation of beautiful artwork and they have a place to display their art commission-free. It's a win-win. It does mean that we're tempted constantly, but we're ok with that.

3. Gallery 31

Just down the hill from our office in one of our favorite buildings is this family gallery filled with paintings, antiques and decorative arts. We love how close owner Lana Chassman is to every item offered in her gallery. The local paper, The Daily Freeman did a nice spotlight on the gallery last winter - take a look. Open on the weekends and by appointment this special gallery is worth a stop.

4. J Bliss Studios

J Bliss Studio in Woodstock is a jewelry gallery with beautiful things created by the husband and wife team of Jared and Joanna Bliss who grew up in Kingston and attended SUNY New Paltz. They do their work in the gallery and you can stop in and see them to browse and discuss custom work.

5. Candlestock

Candlestock has been in Woodstock for longer than we have and is a rival for the oldest gallery in town. They sell candles of course (of every type) and also small works and prints. The huge mountain of melting wax they've built in the middle of the shop over decades of burning candles is a work of art worth stopping for.

6. Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild

Woodstock's Byrdcliffe Colony was born 131 years ago and continues today. You can take a delightful audio tour of the colony with American Historian Alf Evers recorded in 1981 here, you can visit the colony and take a walking tour using this map, and you can visit their gallery at the Kleinert/James Center For The Arts right in town where you'll find works of artists in residence and members of the Guild.

7. WAAM (Woodstock Artists Association and Museum)

WAAM was formed over a century ago, and their beautiful building in the center of the village is perhaps the most photographed spot in Woodstock. With 5 galleries, there's always a lot to see. Check their calendar frequently for updates on exhibitions, events, classes, and auctions.

8. Calvin Grimm Studio

Calvin Grimm's studio is a private oasis just outside the village that can be visited by appointment. A few years ago Calvin allowed us a tour of his studio, his home, and his work. A visit with him is a window into the art world of Woodstock. To schedule a visit, reach out to him via his website.

9. Elena Zang Gallery

Elena Zang Gallery is set on a beautiful property in the Woodstock hamlet of Shady which sits on Route 212 between the Villages of Woodstock and Phoenicia. In addition to the gallery inside which represents regional and internationally known artists there are over 30 sculptures on display in the gardens and a working pottery studio.

10. Genesis Gallery

Genesis Gallery is likewise on the road between Woodstock and Phoenicia. They offer a sculpture garden and art of many types almost exclusively sourced from Isreal. The gallery is open by appointments that are easily made.

11. Woodstock School Of Art

Woodstock School of Art has a robust schedule of events at their gallery in addition to the many high-quality classes they offer throughout the year. Their current instructors exhibition is gorgeous.

13. Woodstock Art Exchange

Woodstock Art Exchange is both a glass blowing studio and a gallery that displays a wide range of works paintings, photography, prints and works on used teabags. Stop on your way out of town towards Kingston.
