Salt Point NY Real Estate

Homes For Sale In Salt Point NY

Salt Point New York real estate offers convenient rural living in a beautiful Dutchess County landscape. When the road from Hyde Park Village to Washington Hollow was laid out in 1750, an agricultural community sprang up where it crossed the Little Wappingers Creek, and it was called Salt Point right from the beginning. Within 15 years a sawmill and grist mill were in operation, but it took almost 100 years before a general store and post office were opened and the village really began to grow. Of Pleasant Valley’s three hamlets, Salt Point remains the least developed, calling little attention to itself, quietly lying between Millbrook to the east and Hyde Park to the west. Its convenience lies in its proximity to Taconic State Parkway just a few miles to the east. Salt Point residents enjoy a country life with a relatively easy commute to both NYC and points north.

Salt Point NY Homes For Sale

Salt Point Homes For Sale

Perhaps Salt Point’s most notable and relatively modern feature is the 1949 Wolfson Trailer House, designed by Marcel Breuer (more famously celebrated for his steel chair) for his friend Sydney Wolfson. Breuer was asked to integrate Wolfson’s Spartan Royal Mansion trailer as one wing of the house, and so it came about that the metal trailer was raised on a stone platform, shaded by a trellis and attached to the new structure. With Breuer’s fame such as it is, the decades since it was built have seen quite a bit of activity around the idiosyncratic Wolfson Trailer House, sited where the Salt Point Turnpike forks off to Hibernia Road, just a few driveways down from the Salt Point Fire Company, one of the busiest organizations in the hamlet.

Modernity in Salt Point ends with the Trailer House. Homes for sale include farmhouses on farmland, victorians, and mid-century colonials, and the vibe is small town New England but much closer to the city!

The Salt Point Fire Company both puts out fires and supports the community with events. Every December they sponsor the hamlet tree lighting, their Trees for Troops program ensures local military families get a great holiday tree, and they put on an arts and crafts fair at the firehouse hall.

The hall is the site of many hamlet activities, including an annual Family Fun Day, Veterans Day BBQ and Halloween costume contest, after the Fright Night Parade from Helen Aldrich Park, where locals take a break from business right in town. Down the street Helen Aldrich Park has tennis and volleyball courts, a baseball diamond and a playground.

Just around the bend is another sweet place to spend time, the Hummingbird Ranch Farm Store; they make maple products, handmade beeswax candles and skin care items, bee-themed jewelry and their popular Hive Mix, a mixture of raw wildflower honey, propolis, pollen and Royal Jelly. They're kind of a general store with a base of their own goods!

Salt Point NY Real Estate

About 200 people live in the Pleasant Valley hamlet of Salt Point, and there are relatively few houses on the market in this small locale, with most homeowners living further south in the center of Pleasant Valley itself. But what there is, you’ll like, such as a late 18th-century farmhouse on 5+ idyllic acres with a stocked pond, orchard, grape vines, antique wood-shop, three barns and mountain views, surrounded by farmland and pastures that was recently on the market.

Another appealing Salt Point home that was recently for sale was a 2,000-square-foot 1860 farmhouse on a half-acre with a great three-season room overlooking the back yard.

If you prefer to build your own Salt Point NY home we can help. However you imagine your ideal Salt Point home, a Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty agent can help make that ideal a reality.
