Homes For Sale In Red Hook NY

Red Hook is a delightful town. As the local experts in Hudson Valley real estate, we find it so charming, so homey, that a few years ago we chose to move our Dutchess County location to the center of the Village of Red Hook. We think you'll love it too. How could you not?

It's impossible to understand a town with a cursory visit. You’ve got to know what goes on behind the scenes to really get it - to understand the community behind the vibe. Residents of the Town of Red Hook, new and old, say the people there are welcoming and friendly. The village and larger town look great, because the community is committed to preserving the historic architecture and agrarian feel of the town through their zoning laws. The old mixes nicely with the new in Red Hook: there’s patisserie and paper, Thai food and pizza, bookstores and health food stores, fabric and hardware, framing and fishing. It is a picturesque hometown if ever there was one. We're glad it's ours. If you're thinking of buying Red Hook real estate or have a Red Hook home to sell, visit us in our Red Hook real estate office.

Red Hook NY History and Lifestyle

Red Hook Homes For Sale

To begin your acquaintance with this northern Dutchess County community, you might visit the Elmendorph Inn, or take our 3D tour of the town’s oldest building (circa 1760). The Elmendorph is home to Historic Red Hook, a non-profit volunteer organization of neighbors and friends whose mission is to preserve and promote Red Hook's history, to welcome everyone to their community center and involve locals and visitors alike in one-of-a-kind events as well as Red Hook's annual festivals. They have the past, present and future of the town at heart.

Another beloved local institution making a difference--since 1898--is the Red Hook Public Library. In addition to lending books and hosting programs (which they’re very good at) they took part in the Libraries Transforming Communities initiative, aiming to strengthen the role of the library in helping the community work together effectively. The group went door-to-door asking, “What kind of community do you want to live in? Why is that important to you? How is that different from how you see things now? What are some of the things that need to happen to create that kind of change?” This was so successful that the entire village now makes decisions based on what they hear on the streets as well as what they do in a meeting room… making Red Hook an even better place to live than it already was.

What else makes Red Hook special? At the top of the list is the series of historic properties on the Hudson River, built by the families of the original founders of Red Hook (primarily the Livingston/Beekman clan); most of the homes survive, including Montgomery Place (1805), Rokeby (1811-1815), Edgewater (1820) and Rose Hill (1843). Another well-known historic architectural gem is Maizefield, built 1795-97, one of the most beautiful landmarks in the village of Red Hook. You can’t miss it - look for the imposing brick wall separating the property from the street.

While you might not take advantage of it every day if you move to Red Hook, living there offers the opportunity to fly in a World War I airplane at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, America’s first flying museum of antique aircraft and a popular Red Hook attraction for more than a half-century. Poet's Walk Park is used with frequency by residents for its outstanding Hudson River views; the Chocolate Factory Theater, the Tivoli Bays National Estuarine Research Reserve; and Red Hook’s Recreation Park, where locals enjoy tennis, basketball, a brand-new multi-purpose field with professional lighting, a new playground and the Rec Park West trailhead are all "pros" in Red Hook's favor. Add them to Red Hook’s well-known pick-your-own farms and many fine restaurants, antique and specialty shops in the 19th-century villages of Red Hook and Tivoli, and you’ll have good reason to shop for real estate in Red Hook.

The Red Hook economy is well-supported, as its largest employer is Bard College, a nationally ranked liberal arts college set on an attractive campus on the Hudson River in Annandale-on-Hudson, one of the hamlets of Red Hook. Bard students, faculty and employees make contributions to Red Hook that would not be there without their influence. Bard maintains some of the great arts institutions in the area, including the Gehry-designed Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and the Center for Curatorial Studies Hessel Museum and library. Other cultural resources to check out in town include Equis Art for contemporary equine artworks and Dream Studio and Solas An Lae dance schools.

All that said, Red Hook still has at its core the history of the land and of the people who live on it. Farming, dairying and fruit growing have been the basis of the town’s economy for about 150 years, and the village still holds the related old-fashioned celebrations, like the Apple Blossom Festival in the spring and, for over 40 years, Hardscrabble Day during harvest time. Red Hook was at one time called Hardscrabble, when the village was little more than the Inn and a couple of houses; these days the name is celebrated with live music all day, a parade, all kinds of vendors and a full schedule of activities. If you want to know Red Hook NY, don’t miss this one!
