Homes For Sale In Philmont NY

A small village in the Town of Claverack, Philmont is the kind of place one might pass through on the way from Hudson to Great Barrington without really noticing. What a missed opportunity! Once a hub of activity that surrounded the 17 mills that operated in Philmont’s heyday, today the bends in the road, small shops, eateries and the historic houses on either side of the road might appear subdued. Living in Philmont, however, is not what one would imagine from the first impression. Philmont has serious spirit!

That spirit is on display in the work of Philmont Beautification, Inc., which was formed by Philmont residents as a not-for-profit charitable organization “welcoming hands-on collaboration in the spirit of a rural barn raising.” Since 2007 their efforts have led to over 40 revitalization projects in the village: storefront and park restorations, re-adaptation of commercial land, affordable housing renovations, the opening of four new restaurants and the establishment of a community resource center.

Philmont Beautification reinvented the site of a former gas station in 2018 to house the Philmont Cooperative, their anchor business, serving local farmers and consumers by creating a community-based food system comprising a market, cafe and commercial kitchen. In PBI’s words, the coop “provides equitable access to affordable, nutritious foods; strengthens our local economy; and fosters sustainable living.” From 70% to 82% of each dollar spent at the coop goes back to the person who grew or made the food; how cool is that? We say it’s not just cool, it’s community.

Philmont has a wonderful website where you can find all the practical ins-and-outs of living in the Village.  It has a helpful business directory which lists farms, landscapers, entertainers, artists and craftspeople, lodgings, several photographers, an acupuncturist, a chiropractor, a masseuse, not-for-profits and lots more, exhibiting what a vibrant community exists in this special place that time could have passed by. Some of the handy listings include a renowned farm-to-table restaurant, Local 111; a friendly pubMcNan’s Variety Foods, a pizzeria & tap house, librarydentist, nursing/rehab center and the Vanderbilt Lakeside, a hotel and bar since it was built in 1860.

Philmont Homes For Sale

One of the places in Philmont where locals exercise their creativity is Free Columbia, where they nurture “art, aesthetic education, contemplative inquiry and action research in a spirit of independence and accessibility.” At Flowering Heart Family Farm they raise sheep, goats, chickens, bees, herbs and vegetables and plant-dye fiber with which to create felt toys; they give workshops on fiber art, felting, herbal remedies and flower essences. Another organization in Philmont working to make the best of the world around them is the High Falls Foundation, “devoted to education, research and conservation of medicinal plants.”

There’s a Senior Community Center right on Main Street, offering Meals on Wheels, and the Claverack Seniors Club,  providing, among other things, transportation to non-emergency healthcare appointments.

Enjoying the pristine landscape around Philmont could include visiting the 47-acre High Falls Conservation Area, home to Columbia County’s highest waterfall and eight miles of hiking trails. Right in town residents take a dip at Summit Lake which they call “the reservoir,” though it never was one. Another popular spot is Oakdale Beach in Hudson, quite nearby. There are several parks in town, including Claverack Town Park, Memorial Field and Philmont Park. The Taconic Hills Aquatic Center offers pool swimming just eight miles away.

Albany is only 40 miles from Philmont,  so all the hospitals, airports and other big-city amenities are easily accessible. There’s also a hospital right in Hudson.
