New Lebanon (comprising the hamlets of Lebanon Springs, New Britain, New Lebanon, New Lebanon Center and West Lebanon) is most famously home to the Shaker Museum, the world’s most comprehensive collection of Shaker objects. Spanning the area around the intersection of Routes 20 and 22 and smack-dab on the western border of Massachusetts, New Lebanon is a popular and thriving rural community. It may be small, but it’s vital! The atmosphere largely stems from having the city of Pittsfield right over the Massachusetts border, from being less than 25 miles from Albany, and from being at the base of the Berkshires. The air’s sparklingly clear, and everywhere you look, nature reigns.
Being at the foot of the Berkshires, the New Lebanon area is full of waterways such as the Kinderhook and Wyomanock creeks. The Hand Hollow Conservation Area - a collective of properties that were donated by people who wanted to preserve the open spaces - allows kayaking, fishing, hiking and cross-country skiing. It’s also a birdwatchers’ haven, and they sponsor a photography exhibition, book club, and monthly environmental education presentations

The town retains its connections with the past in various ways, including the iconic Mohican Blessing Fountain, created by sculptor Henry Hudson Kitson and fed by natural springs. The Shaker Swamp, a 495-acre wild tract of land in the center of New Lebanon, is fed by the famous springs which support indigenous plants once gathered by the Mount Lebanon Shakers for use in their herbal medicinals business. New Lebanon Farmers Market is a convenient resource for home-chefs; one orders online Monday to Wednesday and picks up on Thursday or orders Thursday to Saturday and picks up Sunday. Available are loads of fresh fruits and vegetables, grocery items and fresh-baked goods, handmade soap and flowers.
Another benefit of having a comparative metropolis (Pittsfield) nearby is the number of restaurants, inns and nightspots New Lebanon can support due to city overflow. The Blueberry Hill Market and Café serves up breakfast, lunch, home-baked treats and a massive menu of coffees and teas that would do credit to any college town. Mario Soldato opened Mario’s in 1964; nearly 60 years later it is still chef- and family-owned, serving the classic antipasti, pasta, entrée and salad courses with emphasis on local ingredients and their house-made pasta. And what town would be complete without a local pizza place? Jimmy D’s is another family-run eatery; Dimitris Dilis (that’s Jimmy D) and his wife, Eleni, focus on pizza and Greek salad, but they offer a very big menu of the Greek diner sort in their place, where they hope everyone feels right at home. The K Shack is a seasonal roadside stand focusing on farm-fresh local ingredients; they call themselves a “funky little food shack” and prominently list on their website several local farms and businesses they partner with. New Lebanon has Chinese take-out at China City, an Indian restaurant, and a bagel shop, O’Maddie’s Café. For beer-lovers there’s the Roaring 20s Brewery, sited in a beautiful old brick building with a green outdoor area, and M&M’s Tap and Tavern for craft beer and pizza.
